GIVE JEANS A CHANCE - UPDATE
1/20/2010
Just a quick update that we've all collected more than 5000 pairs of jeans for the Give Jeans a Chance campaign, which is great news.
95% of all stores have been matched up with a homeless shelter and a lot of the jeans have already been donated to local homeless shelters. The National Coalition of the Homeless is super busy with the whole Haiti disaster, so there might be a short delay with the pick up of the remaining jeans at some stores.
Some of the jeans will get donated to Haiti because 1.5 million people lost their homes. All the remaining jeans should get picked up at participating stores within the next 10 - 14 days.
The winners will also be announced soon...
Thanks for all your help.

VOLCOM CLEANS UP THE BEACHES IN HUNTINGTON BEACH!
9/9/2009

Well, Labor Day weekend has come and gone and it really seems like summer is coming to an end.
We decided to do a little end of summer beach clean up at lunch today to pick up after everyone that came to the beach for the weekend. We decided to do a little stretch of the beach between Newport and Huntington Beach where a lot of us surf in the summer. This small stretch of beach is in between the two cities and is not cleaned by either so it was an absolute mess this afternoon. If you ever wonder where all the foam from your cups, plates, coolers etc. goes, I think we found out. Take a look at the pictures and you will see, hopefully this makes you think twice before using any of these products.
Thanks to everyone that came out, see you out there next time.

V.CO-LOGICAL UPDATE
9/3/2009
Bad News...SIGG Bottles and BpA!
Well this is a real bummer to have to report. If you haven’t already heard SIGG has acknowledged that the liner in their water bottles made prior to 2008 do indeed contain BpA (Bisphenol A – a chemical that is continuously being banned in many parts of the world) and that while they are confident that there is no leaching, the chemical is there and that, to me is problematic.
There are many options out there, EcoUsable (stainless steel) and MIZU Life (stainless steel) are partners of ours, so make your choice wisely when choosing a personal water vessel.
If you do own a SIGG, they are willing to take it and exchange your old one with a new, BpA free one up until Oct 31, 2009.

BASIC NEEDS Summer Speaker Series at The Ecology Center
Well we finished up our series this past Thursday with a panel that included me, Roian Atwood of Sole Tech, and Johnny Shillereff of Element. I was very stoked to be up on a panel with those two and between the three of us, I think we were able to articulate the current state of eco-business in our industry as well as opportunities and challenges that continue to exist in the marketplace.
If you didn’t have a chance to attend any of the events, please keep Ecology Center events on your radar. Ask anyone who has been to one and you’ll hear the same response: The place is awesome, the vibe is great and you will always leave with more (info, passion, inspiration, motivation, good food, etc.) than you came in with!
Volcom Continues Ban on Single Use Plastic Water Bottles (Save on MIZU bottles!)
Speaking of new water bottles...don’t forget if you still do not have a killer re-usable water bottle, check out the product from some friends at MIZU. They’ve got a great product range and it just so happens they’ve teamed up with POW (Protect Our Winters – one of our 1% for the Planet donation recipients for 2008) for a cool, co-op bottle.
Additionally – they are offering a 30% DISCOUNT off the total order. Simply type in vcological in the coupon code area and you’ll save $$! Learn more and shop at www.mizulife.com.
Inside the Outdoors
This is an amazing program that works mostly with kids to get them out and into nature as part of their school curriculum. Their headquarters is out at Rancho Sonado in Silverado Canyon, and if you’ve been out there you know how roots that place is.
Check out their community calendar as there are some cool workshops and events (like and Astronomy & Stargazing Family Hike) that are open to the community. Some are there on site, some are at other locales in the area. Either way, it’s worth checking out!
Transition Laguna.com Movie Night
Check out What Will We Eat? And The Story of Stuff at either Yoga Works or Oasis Child in Laguna Beach. This program has been screening some really good, ecologically focused films so have a look and learn more at transitionlaguna.com.
Green TV?
These are some good ones – check out:
• Eco Trip at sundancechannel.com and explore the REAL cost of living.
• TOXIC at VBS.tv : Environmental coverage (as they put it) without a bunch of preaching or sobby string music.

V.CO-LOGICAL DAY EVERYDAY!
7/30/2009
Hot August Night, Saturday August 1st at the Environmental Nature Center, Newport Beach!
Come on out for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and in support of Mammoth Lakes Geothermal Education & Outreach Program. Remember the Mayor of Mammoth (Tony Barrett) who helped pushed the Brother’s Skate park through? Well, he’s part of the organization that is intent on “educating the general public about the viability and value of geothermal heat as an energy source, and to establish a "living laboratory," heated by geothermal sources, for the study of agriculture and other applications in a high altitude environment.” Learn more at www.mammothgeo.org. Tickets are $60 per person with opportunity raffles for trips to Mammoth, Hawaii and Canada (and lots of other stuff!).
BASIC NEEDS Summer Speaker Series at The Ecology Center
We’ve had two events so far and they’ve been awesome. Noted speakers have come out to discuss and answer questions on our most essential topics: FOOD, WATER, SHELTER and APPAREL.
On August 7th, we (along with a list of other eco-sponsors, New Belgium Brewing Co. being one of them) present: Matthew Miller from Appropriate Architecture. He’ll be discussing Architecture as community activism, community design centers and Architecture for the other 90%.
Additionally, be sure to save the date (on Thursday, August 27th) and come on out to the last event of the series and one that will hit close to home: CLOTHING.
Our own Derek Sabori will be on a panel with Erik Joule of Levi’s, Johnny Schillereff of Element Skateboards and Roian Atwood of Sole Tech discussing whatever gets thrown their way and hopefully fostering a dialogue that will encourage continued change and progress in our industry. Learn more at www.theecologycenter.org.

Are You Ordering/Purchasing Office Products and/or CD Cases?
If so, you may want to have a look at some of the products that are available at www.sustainablegroup.net they’ve got a great collection of binders, folders, note pads, pens, etc, all made with either paper from well-managed sources, and/or recycled products. Additionally, most everything they make is recyclable! Good choices here for sure...remember we cast a vote for what we support with every dollar we spend. Landscaping? Installing a Sprinkler System
I really like the idea of this and it looks like it’s definitely worth looking into...imagine, no run off, no evaporation, efficient water usage. All makes sense to me – Thanks Pat Field for the lead on this. www.kisssusa.com.
Eco-Modular Furniture – A substitute for IKEA?

Eco-Info (and more info...)
A few inquiries came our way over the last few weeks and if you’re feeling so inclined and/or are looking for some fun eco-audit reading this evening, check out the inquiries and our responses to learn a little about what goes into what we make and what we’re doing about it:
When considering products made from recycled PET ( Polyethylene terephthalate ) rather than from conventional, virgin polyester, you can expect to find the following eco-advantages:
More marketing will lead to more incentive to recycle plastic bottles in turn keeping more out of our landfills. I’ve read that 8 bottles go into a tee with recycled PET blends and approximately 25 go into a jacket – I would imagine that boardshorts fall somewhere in between that.
Lessens our need for and reliance on oil as plastics are petroleum based.
Less energy spent in the production of raw materials (i.e. Polyester)
Be sure to make note of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch - talk about the need to reduce and recycle!
According to Patagonia’s Footprint Chronicles the manufacture of a standard nylon boardshort:
Consumes approx. 70 megajoules of energy
Goes through approx. 10,000 miles of travel time (start to finish)
Produces 18 lbs of CO2 (approx 43X the weight of the actual short)
Creates about 3 oz. of waste (approx 1/2 the weight of the actual short)
Uses approx 30 gallons of water
Some other facts:
* 4 million tons of textile waste are discarded each day.
* Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.
* The average American throws away about 68 pounds of clothing and textiles per year.
* Cotton production accounts for 25% of the pesticide used in the world.
* To grow enough cotton for one 250g cotton t-shirt it takes 300 gallons of water.

A challenge: Learn what goes into the production of things, how they’re made and what effects those items have on the environment. Every time we purchase, we are casting a vote and whether it’s in the apparel we buy or the food and other products we buy, it’s up to all of us to stop and consider what we are supporting (and perpetuating). If you haven’t already, check out www.storyofstuff.com it’s a great little tale about what it takes to “fuel” our lives...
Lastly, we’re teaming up with organizations like ASEC (Action Sports Environmental Coalition), SIMA and The Ecology Center to promote and participate in events that are geared towards educating kids and adults on the fact that the purchasing decisions they make, directly drive what is offered in the marketplace. We’re letting them know that there are alternatives; that we offer product that is made from recycled materials, organic cottons, reclaimed materials, etc, etc. You’d be surprised (or maybe you wouldn’t be) how much education and awareness still needs to happen out there. By the way, check out one of our Industry’s first “Green Rooms” at here.

BASIC NEEDS SUMMER SPEAKER SERIES THIS THURS! (JULY 9TH)
7/7/2009
Volcom is proud to be a partner with The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano, CA as the BASIC NEEDS Summer Speaker Series rolls out for a whole summer’s worth of great speakers, topics and discussions.

On June 18th, the series was kicked off with an inspirational evening revolving around the topic of FOOD, one of our obvious “Basic Needs”. Michael Besancon, the Senior Global Vice President of Purchasing, Distribution and Marketing took a low key approach as he briefly spoke to his past 40 years in the natural foods industry and then opened the floor up for questions. Topics revolved around the size of Whole Foods Markets, access to organic foods, the battle of the giants in the organic sector, pricing, the history of organics and natural foods and then what’s next; what’s beyond organic? According to Michael B., that’s the next step and the question we should all be asking. He spoke passionately about traceability and transparency, fair labor, and the idea that every time we spend a dollar, we cast a vote. A vote for organic, fair trade, local or not, but every dollar is a vote. That can be hard to swallow sometimes.
The setting was perfect, outdoors amongst the native plants and edible gardens, The Ecology Center makes any event somehow, somewhat magical. Beer and wine were served as were appetizers from Whole Foods Market and other organic suppliers and as the sun set, you could tell that people were buzzing. Happy they had just heard such inspiration and motivational words and discussions and excited about next month’s event.
Join The Ecology Center (and all the sponsors) on Thursday, July 9th as Emily Pilloton from Project H Design comes San Juan to discuss a very serious topic: WATER.
Specific to the Action Sports Industry, we invite you to also join for what’s expected to be a serious look at what goes into (and out of) the clothes we purchase and wear:
August 27th: Clothing
Erik Joule, Levi’s
Johnny Schillereff, Element Skateboards
Roian Atwood, Sole Technologies

CURRENT STATE OF V.CO-LOGICAL AFFAIRS:
5/15/2009
Occasionally, we get letters from kids and/or students asking what we’re doing about the state of our environment. The latest is this letter from Camille, a sixth grade student inquiring about our current V.Co-Logical affairs. Camille’s letter is just like the others – and in a nutshell, here’s what we’re doing:

Dear Camille,
Thanks for taking the time to write us and to inquire about our position on the environment.
We are very concerned about the state of our planet and the affect that our business has on it. That said, we are doing many things here at HQ and beyond to lessen our impact on the environment and to give back in general. Please go to our Giving Back blog at www.volcom.com/givingback to learn more about what we’ve been up to.
More specific to your questions, please be sure to keep any eye out for (and request if you can’t find it) our V.Co-Logical product line. These are all items that have a lesser impact on the environment than conventional pieces. Things like:
• 100% organic cotton tees and tees with a 5% organic blend
• No chemical wash jeans
• Recycled PET (plastic bottles) polyester boardshorts and snow outerwear

• Hemp and recycled materials in select accessory items

VOLCOM BEACH CLEAN UP IN DEERFIELD BEACH, FLORIDA!
4/5/2009
On Saturday April 4th, Volcom and IWS Deerfield sponsored a beach clean up in Deerfield Beach. We met at IWS at 10:00 am
and walked the short distance to the beach. A bunch of groms came to help along with Cheyne and Karley (the owners of
IWS). We sent a group about a mile North of the pier and a mile South of the pier. It was amazing how much trash there was
on the beach. Much of this trash you don’t even notice on a day-to-day basis. We provided water, trash bags, gloves, and
sun block for the crew. We accumulated about 10 bags full of trash and when we got back to the store all who participated
received a ton of Vco-Logical gear. A great time was had by all.
Stay tuned for the Juno Beach clean up on April 23rd, with Ground Swell and Ocean Magic and May 30th in Ft. Lauderdale with BC Surf and Sport.

GIVING BACK UPDATE!
3/19/2009
Volcom Recycling Report Card:
Wanted to share an exciting report with you. Check out our Recycling Report card. For the year, we recycled over 270,000 lbs of materials! What does that mean? Where did it all go?
Well, as you can see, most of our recycling came from cardboard (thanks intern Micah for the research here):
Corrugated cardboard is pulped and blended with new pulp from wood chips. The pulp is screened, rolled, and dried into two types of cardboard called medium (the ribbed inner layer) and linerboard (the smooth outer layers). Both are sold to a boxboard plant to be formed into new corrugated cardboard. The process of recycling to make new cardboard uses 23% less energy than the process of making brand new cardboard. Volcom recycled 256,119 pounds of cardboard in 2008, saving the energy it would have taken for the construction of 58,907 pounds of new cardboard.
Additionally, Volcom recycled 5,900 pounds of mixed paper, saving 48 trees from being cut down and processed into new paper!
Volcom recycled 3,300 pounds of plastic poly bags last year, which is approximately the weight of a midsize sedan (FYI, this is only a fraction of what we use. Imagine that...). It takes 500-1000 years for plastic bags to break down in landfills, so landfills normally incinerate them, which would have created 100 pounds of air pollution from what Volcom recycled.
Volcom recycled 5915 pounds of metals and aluminum that were processed into over 12,000 Kilowatt hours of energy in the form of electricity or heat. This is done by creating combustible fuels such as methane, methanol, and ethanol. That is enough energy to run 200,000 60-watt light bulbs or about 4,400 households.
In fact, the energy we saved overall could power over 200,000 households! Or In total, Volcom saved enough energy to run 9.25 million 60-watt light bulbs, and enough water to fill 58 swimming pools.
Boardshorts from Bottles?
We know you’ve heard of it, but check out Volcom’s collection of V.Co-Logical Boardshorts (made from recycled PET aka Plastic Bottles).
Why Recycled makes sense PET
PET stands for POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE and is usually used for water bottles. Basically, you grind down/melt down the plastic and turn it into a polyester-type yarn. Awesome, right? Look for the Recycled PET alternative next time you’re shopping for a polyester product (Boardshorts, Fleece, even blended tees now)
Approximately 31% of plastic bottles produced in the United States are made from a material called PolyEthylene Terephtalate, "PET" or "PETE." Usually clear or green, the plastic is mostly used for consumer goods such as soda bottles and food jars. According to the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), in 2005 United States manufacturers produced 5.075 billion pounds of PET products. Such a high production rate makes finding uses for post-consumer plastics imperative. If the current rate of manufacturing and consumer recycling remains, 40 billion pounds of PET waste will be added to our landfills within only a decade.

Drinking out of Plastic Water Bottles?
Sure it’s OK to drink out of a plastic water bottle...when you forget your re-usable! :) I don’t mean to be a broken record on this one, but check this out from Sustainable Dave:
“I'm kind of shocked that with all of the info out there, people still continue to use plastic water bottles. I've asked around and the two main reasons I hear are that it's cheap and it's readily available.
Cheap- OK, I may be cheap, but water bottles are not. Let's say that i drink 3 bottles worth of water every day 300 days out of the year. At $1 a bottle (averaging a bit) that's $900 a year out of my pocket. On the flip side, here in Los Angeles, the same amount of water out of my tap will cost me about $1 from the city. So the cheap thing doesn't really add up. A good metal water bottle will run you $15 or so, but will last about 10 years or more, so that won't put it over the top either. Even if you are one of those folks who thinks your tap water is not good, and want a filter for your house, you're still talking about less than $1 a day. Bottom line is that tap water is cheaper.
Readily Available - Here in the US there is excellent drinking water almost everywhere you go. We've got running taps in houses, businesses, public places and at the beach. In fact, there is water many places (your house) that bottles will never be sold at. So the idea that it is easier to grab a plastic bottle than grabbing your aluminum water bottle is truly ridiculous especially since there are so many places to fill them up.
Now let's look at what drinking out of plastic bottles have going against them.
• Most bottled water is not regulated (meaning you don't know what you are drinking) while tap water is.
• Manufacturing and shipping a bottle of water wastes 5 times as much as is in the bottle.
• Single use plastic bottles can leach BPA (Biphesenol a) which is a hormone disruptor in humans.
• While many bottles are recycled (actually downcycled), over 3 million bottles end up in landfills each day in California alone, and many more end up out at sea and in our rivers.”
Word of the Day: Sustainability
“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs; the ability to maintain a certain process at a certain state. For humans to live sustainably, the Earth's resources must be used at a rate at which they can be replenished.”
Examples of living a sustainable lifestyle:
• Eat Organically
• Purchase Recycled when you can
• Recycle what you can
• Consider Bio-Fuel
• Consider Solar
• Consider Wind
There are many, many more and many ways that we can all contribute to this simple (and profound) concept.

VOLCOM CF SURF DAY, HALEIWA, HAWAII
12/7/2008
Today was the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We woke up and went to Haleiwa to help kids with Cystic Fibrosis learn to surf. Pretty much everyone at the houses showed up to learn about CF, and show the kids an amazing time, pushing them into waves and teaching them the basics. Every kid and young adult with CF on Oahu, a total of 11 awesome people showed up. The greatest thing about all of this, is one of the best natural treatments for CF is being in the ocean, as the salt water and air helps their condition and everyone was having a blast. After an amazing morning we headed back to the pad to surf some fun waves out front. The sunset tonight was amazing. It truly was an inspiring day. For more info on Cystic Fibrosis, visit the Mauli Ola Foundation website by clicking here. Mauli Ola _TC - photos by Tom Carey

VOLCOM CF GOLF DAY - TURTLE BAY, HAWAII
12/6/2008
Yesterday we went to Turtle Bay to support the Mauli Ola Foundation in their quest to help those with Cystic Fibrosis. It was a perfect day and 18 holes were calling our name. Bruce, Wassel, Bill Ballard and myself made up Team Volcom and tee off was at 10am. Good thing they were using the "Best Ball" system (where each team continues to hit through the hole on the best shot from any teammate), cause my golf skills are nothing short of horrendous. Bruce, Wassel, and and Ballard have awesome skill, so we wound up tearing through the 18 holes with a score of -4. Not good enough though, 10 under par was the winning score. A great day, great cause, and we look forward to teaching the kids with CF tomorrow how to surf. -mikeG

VOLCOM SUPPORTS 2008 GOLF FOR AUTISM TOURNAMENT
11/20/2008
Calling all golfers! The inaugural 2008 Golf for Autism event is expected to be one of the most well attended and highly anticipated events regarding
autism awareness in Orange County. There are more spots open for golfers - so make sure you click over to GolfForAutism.com to register now!
Rocky's story with autism begins when he was diagnosed with this developmental disability at eighteen months old. Overwhelmed with concern for his well-being and future, parents Alison and Patrick McCloskey sought out the best doctors and specialists they could to find answers for their son.
They quickly realized that they were not alone. In the United States, 1 in every 150 children is born with autism. A new case of autism is diagnosed every 20 minutes in our country alone. The McCloskey's were entering a world with a lot of uncharted territory and countless families who wanted answers and needed help for their children as well.
Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S. today and ironically receives less funding than other, less prevalent childhood diseases. Alison and Patrick realized that in order to provide Rocky with the care and treatment he needed, they would have to make some grave financial sacrifices. Medical insurance often does not cover the cost of most therapists and specialists, not to mention the added cost of providing a specialized diet.
Your commitment to being a part of the solution in the fight against autism will make a tremendous difference in the life of Rocky and give him a chance at having a full and meaningful life. Your participation in the inaugural Golf for Autism event will ensure that this event will be a success and will work to provide funding to other children affected by autism in the years to come.

THE ECOLOGY CENTER GROUNDBREAKING!
11/18/2008
There's something V.Co-Logical going on out in the San Juan/Dana Point area. Last week was the
groundbreaking of a great new concept and we were glad to be there in support of it...
Centrally located in the suburb of San Juan Capistrano, The Ecology Center at South Coast Farms is an upcoming venture conceived by surfer and founder Evan Marks as a hub of possibility for both the people and environment of Southern California. With the support of local volunteers, the nonprofit organization is currently underway in developing a unique and poignant eco-conscious learning facility.
Located in San Juan Capistrano, The Ecology Center seeks to inspire and involve people in the stewardship of Southern California's environment, providing education in sustainable agriculture, ecological design and the heritage of San Juan Capistrano.

"The Ecology Center's mission is founded on the principle that people can make a difference. I firmly believe that individual actions can transform the community," said Marks in a recent interview. "I hope that the implementation of an interactive learning center will empower local citizens and businesses alike to adopt strategies that invigorate and enhance our natural environment. I envision that one day our collective actions will secure a better future for generations to come."
The Ecology Center aims to not only involve, but to inspire people in the preservation of the regional environment through fun, hands-on activities and eco-friendly workshops.
"The solutions we'll be demonstrating are designed to empower individuals to embrace green living."
To contact The Ecology Center and/or to become a member at any level (starting at $25) contact info@theecologycenter.org. Learn more at TheEcologyCenter.org
Look for news on the grand opening sometime in the New Year!

VOLCOM GOES GREEN AT THE 2008 DAMN AM!
10/30/2008
The 2008 Damn Am wrapped up this past weekend here at the Volcom Facility in
Costa Mesa California. David Loy came out swinging on his final run and took
1st place to become a repeat winner here in front of his home crowd. At this
year's event, we made a real effort to be as green as possible, starting
with Frank Scura bringing in ASEC's Sol Ride, a school bus that runs off
solar power and provided enough energy to run the entire contest off of. All
the power for the sound system, webcast system and computers ran straight
off the bus. Along with that, we had bio-degradable cups, a filtered water
system to reduce on plastic bottle use, and recycle bins all over the
premises.

ASEC's Sol Ride Bus. The solar panels on the roof powered the contest.

GOODSEARCH.COM
7/17/2008
Here's a reminder to use GoodSearch.com (if you aren't already) as your search engine, and every time you do, it'll donate 1 penny to your favorite charity. You use it exactly as you would any other search engine and it doesn't cost you or the organizations a dime. Here are some suggestions of some charities to search for but you can also pick your favorite that you would like to donate to. If 100 people searched for your chosen charity just 2 times a day it would raise $730 in revenue in a year. Every little bit helps so spread the word!

DARK BAR FOR DEAN @ THE MARLIN BAR
7/4/2008
Last stop on our little east coast trip. This one was the most fun for me. The Dark Bar has
been great and being able to do them in the name of a charity makes them that much
better. This one was in New Jersey following Farias Surf Shops Grand Re-Opening event
and we did it in the name of Dean Randazzo. Dean is considered the best surfer to ever
come out of Jersey and he is now battling cancer for the 4th time. We raised $1000.00 for
Dean's Charity deanrandazzocancerfoundation.org. Get well soon and we will
see you in the water Dean!
That being said, the bar tab opened up around 11:00 PM and was run through within one hour. The theme of the party was PINK IS PUNK. I guess only three of us got the TPS report about it but hey, who cares! It's a freakin party! The Birds Of Avalon played a set that shook everyone in the room and had them asking what the hell just happened? For a city that's used to cover bands and booty music the Birds turned more than a few heads. If you have never taken time to listen you should. The Birds of Avalon were amazing.

Hats for Charity
We recently donated 100 hats to the good people at Board Rescue. They are dedicated to getting skateboards and gear to underprivileged and/or at-risk youth in San Francisco bay area. Check out /www.boardrescue.org to learn more or donate to their cause - "Improving Lives Through Skateboarding".
Shoes for Africa
Close to 92% of Kenyan children tested have hookworms which apparently enter the body through exposed bare feet. Through the help of our employees and the organization www.shoe4africa.org we collected over 75 pairs of running shoes for children and adults in Kenya.
Mauli Ola Foundation Fundraiser
We were stoked be a part of the Mauli Ola Foundation for their first official fundraiser party featuring the English Beat on Saturday, June 14, in Laguna Beach. The sold-out event went off without a hitch, attracting over 200 people. A great time was had by all, along with guest speaker Emily Haager who gave everyone an insider’s perspective on the connection between Surfing and Cystic Fibrosis. The Mauli Ola Foundation will use the proceeds to introduce children with genetic disease to the recreational and health benefits of surfing through its Surf Experience Days. It has been suggested that Surfing is an actual treatment for Cystic Fibrosis, and one of the missions of the Mauli Ola Foundation is to get Children and Young Adults with Cystic Fibrosis out in the Ocean surfing. Check out more about the Mauli Ola Foundation at www.mauliola.org.

V.Co-Logical Leads...
Plenty Magazine - This is a great site with leads on going greener and other commentary on happenings in the green community. For example, check out the EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) Program whose aim is to reduce the amount of chemicals of concern in household cleaning chemicals on the Plenty site. Look for the DfE label on products that you use or buy.
e2 PBS Program - Can be found on iTunes.. It's a series about sustainable energy innovations that's very informative, inspiring and easy to watch (on your iPod or iPhone if you want!). To learn more go to http://www.pbs.org/e2/ or look for it on iTunes.
Volcom V.Co-Logical Product - Have you seen the new lower impact, more sustainable, better for the world Fall 2008 V.Co-Logical Product? Check it out by clicking right here.
Guerilla Gardening
If you didn't see this in the LA Times the other day, it's a pretty inspiring read. There are a group of eco-activists with a green thumb that are commandeering neglected public spaces and transforming them (in the middle of the night) to beautiful gardens and other landscapes. You can read the entire article at The LA Times.com. Also, learn more about the Guerilla Gardening movement.
Doing the Right Thing
Green Star for the Irvine Dist. Center Team - Cesar (Warehouse Manger) has been (re)using a good amount of the inbound boxes we receive for outgoing shipping which saves on materials, costs and shipping impacts for new boxes that would otherwise be needed. Additionally, they are recycling the remainder of corrugated cardboard that they are unable to re-use. Nice work Cheese! Keep it up!

V.Co-Logical at the BRA Conference in Puerto Rico (Volcom, front and center) - A few weeks ago, the Board Retailers Association convened in Puerto Rico to discuss the state of the union and were greeted by Organiboy, our V.Co-Logical in-store display program and the Fall 08 V.Co-Logical line. The Action Sports Environmental Coalition was hosting a conference on Green retailing and Volcom was front and center; hopefully the retailers were inspired to dive deeper into our V.Co-Logical product offering!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope this message finds that you had a good week and are ready for a great weekend...

Every Volcom employee has been given a green V.Co-Logical mug to use in the office for coffe, tea, water, etc... to reduce the amount of waste that is produced daily.
Additionally, here are a couple V.Co-Logical tips from the Society to help lessen your impact as you go kick off the new week:
Use Your Mug Out of the Office! - Don't be shy about bringing your own mug and/or re-usable cup to the coffee shop. They're more than happy to fill up your re-usable cup with the same great tasting coffee, thus eliminating the demand for one more disposable product!
Think About Bottled Water - We all love our water, but think about the amount of plastic bottles that go un-recycled (some reports say 8 out of 10 end up in the landfills or in the ocean). You may do a good job of re-cycling them, but think about the statement you make when your friends and family see you using a canteen style water bottle rather than the now accepted/expected plastic bottle. Consider the V.Co-Logical alternative, consider a good, long-lasting, safe and durable re-usable bottle. I'm a fan of the Sigg stainless steel bottle (http://www.mysigg.com), but there are many other alternatives.
Here are some additional resources about bottled water and conserving water in general, check them out they are an interesting read:

As Volcom employees it is our duty to consistently assess whether we are living up to our commitment to the planet by promoting socially responsible actions at our headquarters: Living our Code.
V.Co-Logical Society
Volcom's V.Co-Logical Society is our in-house initiative for a better environment and community (both socially and ecologically). Our goal for the Society is to improve the quality of our lives here in the office, while lessening our impact on both the environment AND our community. We're promoting (at a company level) awareness, recycling, beach clean-ups, carpooling, biking and/or skating instead of driving, etc, etc.
While it's definitely in its infancy stages, the Society has big plans and is definitely a part of the company that is here to stay. The team here is super excited about giving back and impacting less and we've got a lot of cool things planned to help lessen the blow on the enviornment - stay tuned at www.volcom.com!
Let's start with the basics: RECYCLE AND AWARENESS!
Duties:
1. Be conscious of paper consumption, print only when absolutely neccesary.
2. Place ALL paper waste into one of the conveniently located recycle bins.
3. Place bottles and cans in the recycle bins located in the break-room.
4. Use minimal amounts of paper towels and toilet paper in the restrooms.
5. Bring beverage cups from home.
6. Be conscious of power consumption by making sure the lights and heat/air conditioning are off when you leave.
7. Try to utilize alternative means of transportation to get to work: carpool, ride a bike, skateboard, take the bus, walk, jog, etc.
8. Bring your lunch in reusable containers - cuts down on waste and you avoid driving somewhere to eat. If you do go out to eat, try biking, walking or skateboarding instead of driving.
9. When it's not absolutely necessary, do not print out paper from your computer.
The in-house environmental committee will continue to conduct a more intensive internal look at how we can further improve our strategies.
We are looking at how we can recycle more, use less energy and cover our environmental footprint as much as we can - this is an ongoing process and we look forward to continuing to share our efforts. We hope that you will consider the environmental footprint that you leave and join us by moving in the right direction.

V.Co-Logical Product - Click here to check out the Spring '08 product
The V.Co-Logical Series focuses on low-impact solutions for as many categories as possible. We continue to educate ourselves and request low-impact materials and processes wherever we can... Each season gets a little better, a little bigger. Our goal is to have this mentality be built into the bigger unit as opposed to being a satellite project. ...Moving in the right direction.
1% for the Planet
Giving back: 1% of our proceeds from the V.Co-Logical line go to the 1% for the Planet program. If you haven't checked them out yet, go to One Percent for the Planet and see what they're all about. Basically the money goes to an approved/supported organization of our choice (from the 1%FTP listing) each year. Last year our donation went to the Save the Waves Coalition (www.savethewaves.org). As you may or may not know 1% of each V.Co-Logical sale goes towards the 1% for the Planet program. Consciously consider your next purchase... there's some great product in that collection!

QUICK DESIGN/PRODUCTION UPDATE!
6/18/2008
Beginning with the Spring 2008 product line (in stores since January), all of the Men's slim tees are now a 5% blend of organic cotton. You can still get 100% Organic Tees from our V.Co-Logical line, but it's nice to see the concept moving into the main line; with the amount of Slim Tees Volcom does in the core line, this is a GREAT step in the right direction.

IT'S V.CO-LOGICAL FRIDAY!
5/30/2008

HAPPY GREEN FRIDAY EVERYONE!
5/2/2008

VOLCOM VCO-LOGICAL SOCIETY
4/20/2008

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO!
4/11/2008

E-COUNSCIOUS DONATES A BIKE TO HELP OUR CAUSE!
2/1/2008
Our friends over at Econscious donated a custom/restored/vintage cruiser with V.Co-Logical & Econscious branding for our employees to use to ride down the street to our other offices, skatepark or to grab a quick bite for lunch at one of the many close establishments. We are stoked on the guys at Econscious and their generous donation to the Volcom Family. Riding a bike is just one way we can all save some gas and the enviornment! Thanks Econscious!

CHARITIES WE SUPPORT - AND YOU SHOULD TOO!
5/1/2007
Volcom has teamed up with GoodSearch.com to help make a difference every time you search the internet!
Start using GoodSearch.com as your search engine, and every time you do, it'll make a donation to your favorite charity. You use it exactly as you would any other search engine and it doesn't cost you or the organizations a dime. Just 10,000 of us searching four times a day will raise more than $140,000 for good causes in a year. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of so many people by just changing the search engine we use.
We have made a list of charities that we support below, so feel free to type in their charity or type in any other of your favorite charities when you use Goodsearch. For every search you do 1 penny will be donated to that charity. These include:
