How was the swell for that event?
Yeah that first day it was the first big west swell of the year, and it came in mid January, which is unusual, thank god we had waves.

What was that one nuts Pipe wave like, the first one of the video.
Well, the day started off for me with a couple of rights in the morning, and that was the first time I ever got pushed into a hole, that was kinda scary, feeling a rock actually above my head, isn't too cool at 8 foot Pipe, Backdoor. And then around noon there was no more rights, only big lefts, so I was trying to cherry pick 'em, and sure enough I got that one like 15 minutes into.

Back to the wave you got pushed into the cave, that's ridiculous, explain that some more.
It was early in the morning, I just can remember a really late drop and just barely getting into the barrel, then the wave closed out and I don't know what happened.

Have you ever got shoved into a cave before?
Not like that, I'm pretty tall and I remember being fully extended and starting to swim up to the surface, putting my hands above my head and then I was just touching a rock ledge, so I just grabbed my leash and crawled up my leash.

I guess that's the best way to get out of a cave yeah?
Yeah I mean as long as your board is still there.

Could you open your eyes at all to see anything that was going on?
No not even, too much whitewash.

When you came up, where were you?
I was right in that zone at Backdoor where you don't want to be.

Were you freaked out after you got out of that zone?
Yeah I was done after that wave, and was kinda freaked out for like an hour.

So then you got the huge Pipe wave after the cave wave?
Yeah, and I almost fell on it too.

What's it feel like to get a wave like that and be so on the edge, nearly fall and just barely make it under the lip and then make the friggin' barrel.
Uncontrollable happiness cause I came so close to falling and getting a 10 footer on the head...if I fell right there, I would've got washed all the way to the beach probably. And then to pull in with very little speed and to be so far back....one extreme to the other, to being scared to unbelievably excited.

So it's way more rewarding of a wave to get when you don't think your going to make it and you do.
i mean its real nice when you get an easy good one too, but you dont get those different emotions, those crazy levels, and it just is more rewarding when you come out after a bigger challenge.

Alright ya damn psycho, keep getting those bombs, much love.
Right on Mikey.

A WORD WITH TAI
12/2/2007
Volcom's Tai Vandyke lives at the house all winter long and is in the mix on the daily. We rang him and asked some questions. Check it.

What's a typical morning like at the house?
Depending on if the waves are good or not, either go surf or run the beach, do a clean up and make sure the house is all tidy, either surf or do a workout on the beach with Borg and the whole crew.

When does Borg come over?
7:00am sharp, every morning.

What have been some highlights so far?
I'd say pretty much Alex making the final at the XCEL was a pretty high moment. Other than that, just everyday things like guy's getting good waves.

Who at the house has been on it and pushing it hard?
Tom (Dosland) always gets his good ones, and Wassel is always chargin'. And Dusty...he's just on another f*&#in' level.

Yeah where's his surfing at?
He's already on 'CT level if you ask me. Every time he paddles out, its just, above and beyond.

What's the difference between the original Volcom House and the new Volcom House next door?
Basically the old house is the hang out, that's where everybody is staying except for Bruce and Dean. We try to keep it mellow for them over there so they can keep focused to do well in the contests. The old house is how it always has been, just all the boys hanging out, it's crowded but mellow cause everyone does their part.

How can a young Volcom rider go to the Volcom House and make a good statement?
I'd say just make themselves known to all the bosses, you know. Just pull their own weight, clean up after themselves, don't complain and work their way up the totem pole. And surf everyday and make sure everybody knows their face.

Just be a part of the whole vibe, yeah?
Yeah, don't just hide out in the dungeon all day and just come out to surf, you gotta be a part of the team. I guess just emulate Dusty, on all levels he's pretty much rulin' it. So be like him.........but clean more, hahaAhagaja!

This clip of Mitch is ridiculous! Check it.

SEASON UNDER WAY!
11/22/2007
Greetings from Hawaii. This is our new installment of The Volcom House Weekly...an on-going blog of everything that goes on and around the two Volcom houses right at the Banzai Pipeline. Every winter, this strip of beach is the center of it all. It's the proving grounds for professional surfers worldwide. When it's on, there's not a better arena in the world to watch the best surfers ride some of the most thrilling waves on the planet. If there was a way you could capture the physical and emotional energy over the years the Pipeline has produced, I reckon you could blow up the earth...I guess you can't for good reason.

Both houses are in full effect. Spirits among the troops have been high, as this will be the first official season for us at the new Pipe house. This house will always remain in the cherry condition it deserves. The floors and walls hold such an intense aura. Simply said, the once named "Gerry Lopez" house has had more surfing legends pass through it than you could count. Bruce holds the golden key for the amazing 3rd floor apartment. He will now have the best view of Pipeline right from his balcony. Just below him, on the second floor is Dean Morrison, Dave Wassel and Chava Greenlee. Some of the Hawaii boys even take turns staying in the 3rd room so they all get their share of the splendor.

Meanwhile, just across the Pipe trail is the original Volcom house. This place is run tighter than a military unit. Kaiborg shows up at first light every morning to get the troops in gear. This house sees a mix of talented Volcom riders from everywhere. It's the place the youth come to show everyone they've got what it takes; and place the more experienced keep coming because they're addicted to the thrill of it all. One thing about the house is there's always been a strong camaraderie, whether doing leapfrogs in Borg's workout or surfing out front, it's a band of brothers. Check the newspaper feature below for the latest at the Banzai compound...and stay tuned...
