SEPTEMBER 24 VORUPOR
VOLCOM STONES TOTALLY CRUSTACEOUS TOUR EUROPE 2004
THE FLAT FISH
Harsh weather conditions were forecasted and welcomed both by surfers & spectators to this years FLATFISH event. This being the second last stop for the European Tour.As strong winds were blowing from the West the contest was re-located 15 km South of Klitmoller to the town of Vorupor.
We took shelter next to the Chichagof look a like. With sets, shoulder- to head high and consistent, the waves rolled through for the whole event. The rider’s were battling it out in front of an amazed crowd (which partly consisted of fishermen who’d never even seen a surfboard before.......).
Competitors from Venezuela, Spain, Fiji, USA, Equador, Trinidad and surely good ol’ Denmark the level of surfing was high – leaving spectators with high expectations......!!As the event rounded out to the finals, it quickly became clear who was dominating: Eddie Salazar an Ecuadorian native, now with a Danish citizenship, and last year’s winner impressed everyone (incl. Judges) with long fast lines and incredible board control. Also noteworthy was Darren Awai and Jaji Iglesias who both stunned the crowd with amazing moves in the cold water of the flatfish.
It was time for the final and both surfers and the crowd were amped!! The battle for first place was tough; it had become clear who, the top three guys were. Eddie Salazar’s fast lines board control and floaters which put him in front for first place.
Holding down second was Darren Awai who was fast and loose form Trinidad, followed by Jaji iglesias a finalists in the Rumble Fish event in Portugal in third and Sven Hansen with good wave selection and quick snaps for fourth chased by new talent Eno Kloft in fifth and rounding out in sixth place Sigurd Jeppsson Below’s the result:
Prize giving was next. This took place in the local fish market. Everybody was stoked and tired and as the first rain drop fell, people drove home to rest, get a shower and get ready for a few drinks at the Volcom house later in the evening.
All in all a really good event that people look forward to see and participate in next year again. Thank you to all the FLAT FISH supporters >/font>Electric, Nixon,Globe.
