VQS EUROPE 2004
THE CODFISH
HELLESTO-STAVANGER, NORWAY

With gray skies and rain we were surprised to see a total of fifty people waiting to sign up for the first Codfish Surf Series event to be held at Stavanger in Norway. Everybody met at Bora beach to register and to decide where the conditions were best to the start the last event of the Totally Crustaceous European tour. With the best spot being Hellesto beach we arrived and set up the tent. We started the heats as soon as the draw was finished to make the most of the conditions. Onshore winds blew with waves in the two feet range everybody was eager to start the event because of the news of a decreasing swell.

The pro snowboarders who entered this event included, Mads Johnsson, and Fredrik Austbo, and Terje Haakonsen.



The Juniors started with the youngest competitor being 9 years of age. For the final it was Inger Elin Knappskog who was the highest placed girl taking out the girls division. This left Magnus Prestegaard taking the top spot from Kim Messmer who was in second followed by Mikkel Bang in third.

In the Open the major upsets of the day were Jaymin Rowlands, and Terje Haakonsen, who were both unlucky with the conditions, and were eliminated in the semi-finals. Everybody thought these guys would be fighting it out in the final. Terje rode the best wave of the event but it was before the start of his heat so it didn’t count. Maybe next time!

With the Terje, and Jaymin, upset, everybody in the final was keen to take the title. The conditions would be the toughest they had been all day. But, with the sun coming out, the finalists we keen to get underway. Jonas Paulsen, surfed the best and wasn’t letting go of first place. Second was Jan Erik Jensen, with some nice waves followed by Jacob Hadler, in third and Kristian Engstrom, in fourth.

A big thank you to Bjorn and Kent from Volcom Norway. Jaymin Rowlands and his support crew. Jan Prokes who was my tour guide for the trip. Die Die Die the band who made the long road down to Stavengar from Oslo and played a nice set at the Folken with special guest Happy Tom, from Turbonegro.
