VOLCOM STONE'S VQS CRUSTACEOUS TOURSTONEFISH, SUNSHINE COAST QLD SATURDAY 21st AUGUST

The first of the VQS Surfing events kicked off on the Sunshine Coast in QLD over the last weekend. The skies were clear and the weather was insane at Moffat Point, which was producing some quality 2-3 foot right-hander's off the point break.

The grom division was huge with over 40 groms signing up as well as full Junior and Pro Am divisions. There was a total of over 90 competitors - a huge turn out for the one-day event and a first for the VQS on the Sunshine Coast. Along with a huge line up, the waves rolled through all day with all competitors, and in particular the groms (under 14's division) carving up the point break. Chris Friend (grom) and Mitch Coleborn (junior) impressedearly with 10-point rides in row.

The giveaways were huge once again, with kids going crazy and joining in the fun of the VQS. Young grom Nicholas McDonald scored himself a brand new BODY GLOVE wetsuit after he carried back the biggest boulder from the other endof the beach. James Triton threw his arm up when he scored himself a free pair of ELECTRIC sunglasses. The prize giveaway activities went on all day with all the kids walking home with their hands full and a smile on their face. All competitors also scored themselves a VQS tee.

The surfing was entertaining all day - all finalists deserving their spot inthe finals. Grom stand out CHRIS FRIEND dominated the grom final ahead of TYSON KOZUSZEK, ASH TUTTON in 3rd and SAM RHODES finishing in 4th place. CURTIS EWING and MITCH COLEBORN fought out the junior division - EWING edged out COLEBORN to win the Stonefish junior final. BLAKE WILSON finished 3rd and NOAH LANE 4th.

The Pro-Am final was a little slower than the previous two as low tide set in but the boys managed to get the waves. DEAN BRADY took out the final ahead of SHANNON NEIL, with DEAN CONNNELY in 3rd place and TOM RUDD finishing 4th.

All finalists from this weekend's Stonefish have qualified for the VQSChampionship to be held in Sydney in April 2005. All competitors are in the running to take on the world in the World VQS championships in USA in May 2005.
