Girls groms ,juniors and pro's attack durban

Simon Nicholson successfully defended his Volcom Rhinofish title by winning the 2nd event on the South African VQS tour.

Held under sunny skies at Durban's famous Dairy beach pros, juniors, groms and girls tore apart the rippable onshore high tide shore-break in front of Dairy beach's infamous "pumphouse.

The men's pro division was a tightly contested affair with Nicholson edging out cave rock local Shane Warren , Scottburgh's Gavin Roberts and new pier's own Shane Thorne. Nicholson although having the added responsibility of running the event , managed to find the best waves in the alloted time and smashed his way to a second rhinofish title in as many years.

The juniors saw an upset with star in the making, Josh Redman, defeating ISA world grommet champ Jordy Smith , Kyle Beach and an injured Josh Schmeltzer. Josh has a real solid power base to his surfing and is becoming a consistent winner in a tough age group.

The grom division saw a real nail biter between Durban's wunderkind Chad du Toit and south coast grommie Haydn Macnicol, Macnicol opened with a 9.0 but wasn't able to back it up with anything higher than a 4, Chad slowly worked his magic eventually fighting back with two high 7's.

This years Rhinofish saw the introduction of the girls division which turned out to be a great success , with over 20 entries , the young girls showed maturity beyond their years ...but only 4 would remain, and the experience of WQS campaigner Sarah Johnston was enough to triumph over cape towns Stacy Guy, Durban's volcom gal Tasha Mentasti and cave rock's Robin Basnett.

The event was a huge success with fun waves ,a blitzing sun out for 2 days ,all the hotdogs, sweets and drinks (courtesy of Redbull ) the groms could handle......... atmosphere was the key word for the weekend .
The Baboonfish in November will be the last qualifier before the finals in February.
