VOLCOM’S TOTALLY CRUSTACEOUS TOUR VQS (Volcom Qualifying Series)
INDONESIAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2005 HALFWAY – KUTA BEACH, BALI
17th July, 2005

Everybody “Got Nuts!” during the 3rd Annual VQS Indonesian Championship held on 17th July, 2005 at Halfway – Kuta Beach, Bali. The VQS Indonesian Championship is the final held after the 10 events held during the 2004/2005 season. The top 12 kids from each area qualify for the champs. There were 60 qualifiers in total, with kids from all over Bali- Kuta, Sanur, Pecatu and Medewi and a team of 18 nuts drove a treacherous 24 hour drive from Cimaja-West Java to Bali - packed into 2 cars.

The competitors started arriving at the beach from 7 am; they were amping and very stoked to see the free peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast. Ony Anwar, the youngest Volcom rider from Sumbawa, was “nucking futs” in the Grom Division (14 & under). He showed real style, milking the waves all the way to the beach as well as some solid cut backs in the final.The 18 & Under Division was dominated by the Kuta Crew, Wayan Mei and Raditia battled non stop for the first place. In the end Wayan Mei had the better wave selection and took the first place for Rp. 1,75 million in cash.

Volcom drove all Pro Am kids nuts! They were ripping to get the first prize… a free trip (all expenses paid by Volcom) to California, USA to joint the VQS World Championships in 2006… it’s a “nucking futs” prize!! Both Volcom riders Komang Sujaya a.k.a Gogo and Wayan Suprayitna a.k.a Prayit went wave for wave in the final, but Gogo ended on top with his smooth front-side, back-side and cut-back maneuvers- he was so stoked to get the free trip and Rp 2 million cash.He now has his work cut out for him and is excited to have the opportunity to travel out of Indonesia. Gogo was the most serious in his preparation for the event and told us he wasn’t prepared to accept a No. 2 place. After his great win, he was actually speechless.The Air Spectacular is a unique specialty event to the VQS Championships.

Competitors in this event are chosen to compete due to their previous successes and individuality in progressive surfing, 24 competitors were chosen to compete and in the end it came down to four finalists. Agus Purnawan from Sanur finally received the 1st place. All finalists received a prize pack - a big nut full of Volcom products and some cash.

Everybody on the beach got nuts at the Volcom tent… including the 2 human sized Nut Men running around giving stickers and peanuts to more than 1000 people on the beach. The Nut Men, Indra Kubon and VJ Daniel from MTV, did some crazy stunts and games with the crowd. At lunch break, things were heating up on the Volcom stage! Psychofun started to rock the beach with their melodic punk songs and The Hydrant – the best rockabilly band in Bali – made the crowd swing.

After the Final and presentation, the crowd went even more nuts when the one of Indonesia’s premier acts from Bali, Navicula, played their grunge music. Meanwhile, tons of giveaways flowed… nucking futs! In the end, Shaggydog who flew over from Yogyakarta closed the event with their ska-reggae music…. Nobody could stand still, everyone was dancing and singing together… Volcom drive them nuts!
