The Greatwhite was held at Pleasure Point for stop #3 on January 13, 2007. The day started off with crystal clear skies and southeast winds. It was a frigid 26 degrees with glassy 2-3 foot surf. The cold didn’t scare off the competitors, every division was full. The kids would battle for prizes all day with action packed games on the cliff, while waiting for thier heats. It was a good day for all.

We started off with the Groms as usual. With a little kicking, screaming and crying about the cold, they were out there. The local boys were caught off guard by a young upstart from Brazil. Little Lucas Silveria was on vacation in Santa Cruz and decided it would be a good idea to surf the competition. He surfed beyond his years and won every heat and the final. The other 5 competitors in the Grom’s final were no slouches; it was just Lucas’ day. Not only did he win the final, but he also won the kickass prize, which was a portable I Pod stereo brief case along with a slough of other great prizes.
The Junior division is becoming more competitive each and every event. Most of these juniors will be in the Pro-Am next year and it shows. Kyle Thierman and Ashton Madely will definitely be giving the guys a run for their $500 next year as both battled for the Juniors win, with Ashton edging out Kyle for the win. It was an exciting day watching these kids. Colin Dwyer, Bardan Barnes, Kyle Alrech, and Dave Anderson rounded out the final.

Girls, Girls, Girls. When the girls show up they are always stoked and fun to watch, and that’s especially when you got Kim Mayer and Lexi Wilson battling it out wave for wave. In the end it was little miss Kim Mayer with her second pleasure point win, 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. Anna Garaway, Shay Cruz, Sahara Rey, and Hailey Partridge rounded out the final.
The Pro-Am is always the highlights of the day. This one was the most competitive yet. Another visitor from Newport was Daniel Shea who surfed strong throughout the competition to 6th place. It was tight finish between the veteran Peter Mel, new pleasure point local Jason Collins, and west side stand out Nick Lamb. Peter Mel had some huge swooping turns, Jason and Nick had futuristic 360 aerial maneuvers. When the horn sounded it would be the Rat Boy at his own peak who slid away with the $500 and some valuable VQS points.
