Volcom Stones Starfish Surf Series July 13th, 2007 Goldenwest St. Huntington Beach, CA

The Totally Crustaceous Tour 07/08 Season is officially underway. The first event of the year was held at Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach on Friday the 13th of July. With not much swell in the forecast for the day of the event we were keeping our fingers crossed. The morning of the Starfish we were blessed with a touch of wind swell that lasted all day. No matter what the conditions are the kids are always on the ball and ready to compete. The first heat hit the water at 7:00am and the awards were handed out at 8:00pm, which made for the largest Starfish turnout yet. Here's how it all went down:

Girls came from all over to surf it up at the Starfish event. Aubrey Falk, Jess Grimwood and Sarah Hoffert all straight off a recent flight brought there “A” game to Huntington. Sarah and Aubrey each opened up with a solid wave score, but left the door wide open for Jess Grimwood to take over. When the final horn sounded Jess had two high scores in the bag which earned her the victory including a backpack full of goodies, Sector 9 skateboard and Vestal watch. Marissa Shaw, Jamie Hannula, and Anastasia Ashley rounded out the Girl’s final.

After a hearty watermelon eating contest for a DVS “Step into Summer Pack” the Groms took the stage. Shayne Nelson blew up and won his semi heat with a 9 point ride, which earned him a new Santa Cruz skatedeck. The Grom final was stacked with Kanoa Igarashi, Booby Oakvist, Kelly Zahn, Colin Moran, and Breyden Taylor all joining Shayne in the final. Bobby Oakvist had an impressive high scores, but Colin Moran took over and dominated the final. Colin was awarded the first place trophy, a heap of prizes and a custom BMX bike to ride home on.

Next it was the Juniors time to shine, as Ford Archbold, Jared Cassidy, Forrest Troxell, Keetin Devine, Michael Dunphy, and Quinn McCrystal entered the water. Quinn and Keetin dominated their earlier heats with some high scores, but unfortunately couldn't repeat their performances in the final. It came down to a two Junior race between Ford and Forrest. Ford looked tough to beat with some good wave knowledge and tight in the pocket surfing. However, Forrest got the waves he needed and sealed the deal. He took the victory, a complete skatedeck from Zoo York, Electric sunglasses and a backpack loaded with other goods.

Last but not least it was time for the money round. The Pro-Am division was packed like always with Ricky Whitlock and Willie Safreed having some great earlier heats and looking solid for the final. Chris Broman and Teddy Navarro also look strong after a good performance in the repo charge heat. Ricky Whitlock started off the final strong and never let up. He looked to have in the bag, but in the final seconds Kilian Garland hit it big with a last minute wave that he slashed to the beach. This would put the nail on the coffin for Kilian as he grabbed the $500, the custom first place trophy, Sector 9 skatedeck, Future Fins and a bag of other goodies.
