Volcom Stones Blowfish Surf Series Seaside Reef, Cardiff Febuary 23, 2008

The third and final stop of the Blowfish Surf Series at Seaside Reef, Cardiff was hands down one of the best contests of the year! The whole event was off the hook from the crazy groms willing to do anything for some promo, to rippable head high pulsing swell. The level of surfing was so ridiculously high in every division, every heat looked like a stacked final. Here is how the crazy finals went down.

The Girls Division had some solid surfing all day but, first things first a huge shout out to Darlene Connoly and Cheyenne Arnold. They are hands down the craziest girls I have ever seen. They walked around all day arm and arm in one huge pair of women’s underwear and wore glasses with no lenses and leopard print spandex in there final. Marissa Shaw blazed threw winning her semi heat, but couldn't get her wave count in the final. Darlene jumped out to an early lead with a solid scoring left but, right on her heals was Lauren Sweeney with relentless turn after turn receiving eights across the board. In the end Darlene could never catch up. Jamie Honnula, Marissa Shaw, Cheyenne Arnold and Kristi Rife finished out the final.

The Grom final was stacked with two of this years previous event winners Kent Nishiya and Cooper Jones. Bobby Okvist was first to post a score with a couple critical turns, but couldn’t hold onto the lead for long as Kent grabbed the next wave and stole the lead. Cooper however, wasn’t having it and would proceed to absolutely destroy one of the better set waves to come through, not to mention receiving one of the highest scores of the day. That would be enough for him to cruise to the winners circle and walk home with some of the biggest prize bags of the year including a Vestal watch, Zoo York skate deck, Future fins, a mean electric guitar, pocket amp, and a gift card to Chipolte burrito. Kyle Marre, Pat Curren, and Hunter Johnson rounded out the final.

The Juniors had some familiar faces along with some fresh blood for this year. To start things off it was Thomas (T Grom) Clark and Sean Pearson each grabbing an impressive first wave. John Nons grabbed a couple of scores early in the heat, but they all fell short to Derrick Disney who beat out Austen Sneed by half a point for the win. He left with his arms full of prizes not to mention sealing himself an invite to the VQS champs.

The Pro-Am division was just unreal all day. Every time you turned around there were multiple waves stacking up with multiple riders doing turn after turn. Everyone on the beach could not believe what they were watching. Austin Ware struggled at the start, but found his rhythm towards the end posting some respectable scores. He was no match for Sean Marceron and Darrell Goodrum who were neck and neck the whole heat with Darrell edging out Sean for the win and $500.00 in cold hard cash. Tom Curren, Marcello Catcorth, and Nathan Carroll pulled up the rear.
