Volcom Stones Goldfish Surf Series The Rock, Morro Bay

The first Goldfish event of the year kicked off in true Central Cal fashion with some big stormy surf and gale force winds. Despite the challenging conditions and cold water, the kids were as stoked as ever, screaming for more mayhem even after the final buzzer. The fierce competitors let no obstacle stand in their path, from the feeding frenzy circling the lineup, to the hurricane force winds; they battled it out to the end, each on the hunt for the key positioning needed to qualify for the VQS World Champs. Here’s how it all went down.

The Girls final hit the water like a pack of electric eels lighting up the stormy conditions with the precision of a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. Amy Covert looked like an early favorite, snagging two solid waves right off the bat giving her some solid mid range scores. Katie Draeger and Alex White answered back with some big turns of their own but it was Rachel Harris who really took the shark by the teeth and slaughtered every set that came her way. For her merciless attack on the defenseless waves, Rachel got the win, a complete Riviera skate board, and a backpack bursting at the seams with prizes. Alex, Katie and Marissa Kuiken rounded out the rest of the final.

The Grom final was a fierce battle to the end that would make even the gruesomest bumfights video seem mundane. Austin Mibeaux looked like a favorite for the win, running off pure anger due to a quarter teaspoon of baby powder that happened to land on his G-unit soldier jacket earlier in the day. In the final however, it was Trent Popovich who managed to grab 3 huge scores in the dying minutes of the final, snagging him the win, a kick ass electric guitar, and seemingly endless amount of prizes.

Throughout the day, the Junior division had the Pro’s shaking in their boots for fear of facing this furious force in the years to come. The final ended up being a local battle between Cody Lewis, Jackson Newel and Simon Murdock. Simon jumped to an early leading getting a huge score right off the bat. This infuriated Cody who couldn’t let his years of surfing gale force blown out rock go to waste. He answered back with a huge score of his own putting the pressure on Jackson and Simon. However, when the five minute horn rang it seemed as if a Molotov cocktail was lit under Jackson and Simon who both grabbed some massive scores. When the final buzzer rang it was an ecstatic Simon Murdoch who stood victorious under the glorious shadow of Morro Rock. For his spectacular win, Simon was awarded with a custom hand painted trophy, Skull candy head phones, and enough prizes to mediate a peace keeping deal with the local shark population.

The Pro-Am division on the central coast is always interesting, as all sorts of characters come out of the woodworks to defend their positions in the numerous lineups throughout the land. Just in case the boys needed a little more motivation, the $500 first place prize put even the creedliest Cen Cal locals into their hooded seal skins suits in search for some cold hard cash. Whenever money is on the line, Dustin Ray gets pretty fired up and seemed like a major force in the final. Jimmy Herrick put on a good show throughout the day, but finished in fourth behind D Ray who took a respectable third. Unfortunately none of the competitors expected the showdown between wiley competitors Walt Cerney and Nate “The Great Manipulator” Tyler. Walt surfed with the expertise and knowledge that got him the win over Nate last year. Walt even managed to snag the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day with a huge backside blast. Nate found the key waves and manipulated them with the surgical precision of a brain surgeon for the win, 500 dollars cash, and heap of prizes.
