Volcom Stones Butterfish Surf Series Mandalay, Oxnard

Despite some unpredictable weather reports calling for rain and lighting a few days before the event, the report on Friday afternoon called for cloudy skies with a very low chance of rain. Needless to say, we were shocked when bombarded with torrential downpours and lighting storms on the drive to the contest Saturday morning. Luckily the rain subsided for just long enough to make the call to run and get the tents up and competitors signed in. We had no idea for what kind of event we were in for!

As soon as the first heat hit the water, a massive rain storm came upon us prompting many to run for higher ground in fear of flooding. We decided to run through the rain and hung onto the tents for dear life while the juniors threw so much spray that it was nearly impossible to differentiate between the rain and the spray coming off their turns. The morning was filled with off and on rain and some full blown lighting storms but the waves were cranking and the competitors frothed anyway. By noon most of the major rain had passed and the waves just kept getting better and better. Overall it ended up being a top notch event with some insanely good waves and awesome humans.

The girls hit the water faster than an Olympic track team, ecstatic to surf some perfect 4-5 ft A frames. Catherine Clark looked destined for the win with her local knowledge and the localism that comes with it. Unfortunately, Catherine’s first high scoring wave fired up Demi Boelsterli who answered back with the highest score of the final. Suddenly Chelsea Rauhut got a solid wave of her own and jumped into battle position. Catherine got a nuts backup wave but it wasn’t enough to match Demi, and Chelsea failed to find a good backup leaving the door open for Demi to seal the deal with a solid mid range score, giving her the win, and enough prizes to fill Hugh Hefners mansion. Frankie Harrer proved she’ll be a major force to be reckoned with in the upcoming years, taking down girl’s way older than her right and left. Lexi Vanderlieth and Alex Ross were also ripping and rounded out the rest of the final.

This event’s Grom division was incredible with all the kids psyching on both the games and waves all day. It was truly a global event with competitors from all over the world competing in some nuts waves for some insane prizes. Cecil Lawson looked like the grom favorite, ripping his way through the earlier heats and somehow managing to sneak his way into the juniors finals as well. However Hunter Johnson was amping for the giant R/C truck on hand for first, and grabbed a big score right off the bat. Despite Cecil and Hunter’s best efforts they were no match for Skylar Lawson who looked like a man on a mission once he saw the prize. The kid was lighting up, making Kelly Slater look like an amateur. For his shredding, Skylar walked away with the biggest R/C truck ever seen, a Riviera complete, and a backpack overflowing with prizes.

The Juniors were ripping all day, making everyone on the beach psyched on the insane waves rout front. Elliot Hodges jumped to an early lead grabbing a solid score right off the bat. Unfortunately for Elliot, David Pittmer got fired up and grabbed a huge score of his own. Cecil Page made some valiant pushes but no one could overtake Pittmer who dominated the heat with some huge scores. London O’ Reagan, Chance Lawson, and Casey Underwood brought up the back half of the heat.

The Pro-Am division was stacked from first light, so the final ended up being an absolute blood bath. It was one of the craziest finals I’ve ever seen, with 6 dudes ripping in some of the nutsest conditions ever for a VQS final. It was on Fire!!!!!! 6s and 7s were throw aways in the Pro Am final with barrels and some insanely futuristic moves. Bobby Morris jumped to an early lead with a huge score but this just motivated Sean Hayes, who used his veteran knowledge to find the right waves. Cory Arrambide answered back with some lighting fast surfing while Bobby Morris punted one of the hugest airs of the day, giving him the Electric Volt Thrower move of the event. Neither Bobby’s futuristic moves, nor Corey’s rage induced quickness was enough to match Sean Hayes who managed to grab the longest barrel of the event with 2 mental turns to finish it off. For his wave selection, Sean walked away with 500 dollars cash, a Riviera complete and more prizes than the backpack carrying them could handle.

Overall this was an incredible event and we want to thank everyone for coming down despite the rain and lighting to make this one an over the top event…You guys are awesome!
