Volcom Stones Bushfish Surf Series Bob Hall Pier, Corpus Christi, TX

With the remnants of Hurricane Ike strewn everywhere and the vibe of destruction hanging thick in the air, it was a toss-up as to whether or not we should run this years Bushfish event or postpone it. Instead of following what others would do and cancel the contest, we decided to really dig our heels in and throw one of the best events we’ve ever run with more free stuff than ever before. We threw out the battle call to all our sponsors who helped kick in more promo than ever before, enough to fully load two huge trucks. As soon as the trucks were loaded we blazed our way into Corpus Christi in true Volcom fashion, leaving a trail of stoke and fury that not even Ike could destroy.

This year’s event brought us some of the funnest waves we’ve ever had for a Bushfish Surf Series and the amount of competitors reflected this. Down on the beach it was absolute insanity with the kids going wild and all the locals lending their support with a down home Texas vibe. The barbecue was kept smoking all day and the good vibes flowed like the salmon of Capistrano. Thanks to the huge support from our sponsors, we were able to hook everyone up with tons of free stuff and even managed to donate some huge extra promo boxes to the TGSA, to give away in their Galveston chapter where Ike hit the hardest.

The Girls division was more packed then a high school locker room, with 24 blood thirsty competitors ready to pay the waves back for all the destruction they had caused before. The girls division is pretty mental in that they are usually the first to dive into the beach antics but complete competitive machines once in the water. As the final kicked off, Lauren Kenny and Brittany Tupang both looked like early favorites each grabbing a solid score right off the bat. However none of the girls were ready for the force of nature named Grace Reutzel. With a big score halfway through the heat she jumped into the lead and the whirlwind only continued from there. For her hurricane like force in the final, Grace walked away with the win, a Riviera complete skateboard, a spot into the 2009 VQS World Champs and enough gear to clothe a pack of elephants for a week.

The Grom finalists were amping harder than a starved Texan at a barbecue joint and hit the water in a fury. With a Santa Cruz surfboard on the line, it was a no holds barred grudge match to the end. Daniel Norton looked like a favorite early on and after getting second the last two years in a row he was hungry for the win. Unfortunately for Daniel, Jordan Heaselgrove edged him out at the end for the win, the Santa Cruz Surfboard, and a huge amount of prizes. No one would have ever know there was a hurricane by seeing the look on Jordan’s face as he stood victorious among a mountain of prizes rivaling Mt. Everest in size. Kyle Ferris, Daniel Daigle, Vincent Scrogss, and Brandon Byas rounded out the rest of the final.

The look in the eyes of the Grom final was enough to scare any Bull, but when the Juniors realized a plane ticket to the VQS champs was on the line, they looked ready to kill. The final was one of the closest battles I’ve ever seen but when the final dinner bell sounded and the dust cleared, it was Adam Garrison standing victorious. Clint Richards was right on his heels till the last second but couldn’t snag the win, so it was Adam who walked away with the plane ticket and a plethora of gear. The remaining finalists included, Brandin Stevens, Lindsey Scroggs, James Berry, and Alek Rackrise.

The Pro Am final was more stuffed then the prize bags at the end of the event, with competitors coming from all over the Gulf Coast for a chance at the 500 dollar first place prize. In the final, it was closer than a two man CT with just a couple points separating all 6 competitors. Shane Wiggins looked like a favorite all day but had to settle for third in the final. Zack May got himself 50 dollars for snagging the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day, but ended up getting edged out by CJ Bradshaw in the end. Bradshaw’s impressive powerful surfing got him the win, 500 dollars cash, and a backpack loaded with gear. Morgan Faulkner, Gabriel Prusmark, and Justin Jalufka rounded out the final.

Extra thanks to the TGSA, Tippy from Dockside, Frank at Wind 'N' Wave, Nueces County and the rest of the people from Texas that helped make this event happen.
