The Cooterfish Surf Series started off with a bang this last weekend in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Last season we had to postpone and reschedule this event 3 times, luckily this was not the case this year, with 3-4 foot surf with nice clean conditions. We also had double the amount of entries with 120 kids signed up. Here is a little blurb on how the day went. Enjoy!



As always, we will start off with the ladies. With the ESA Easterns kicking off the next day up in Buxton, NC we saw a lot of traveling surfers attend. Taking the win and some valuable points towards the Champs event in May of 09 was Chelsea Grisham. Chelsea was on fire earning a pair of 7’s early on leaving everyone else to play catch-up throughout the entire 20 min final. For her quick and aggressive surfing, Chelsea took home a massive prize bag filled with tons of product as well as a Riviera complete skateboard. Taking second and walking away with a bag full of loot was Bree Kleintop. Bree beat out Cierra Cunningham, Katy Mac Fitzgerald, Liz Hauser and long time VQS vet Brittany Gomulka in the incredible action packed final. Hope to see all of you at the KDH event on the 28th.



Next up is the Grom Divison and these kids are getting better every year. This Final looked more like the Juniors than Groms prompting the judges to do ID checks after the final. Taking the top spot and winning a brand new shiny red beach bike along with a Volcom backpack filled to capacity was Cam Richards. Cam has been on fire this year taking a win in CA last month in Huntington Beach. Keep an eye out for this kid at the champs. Close behind Cam was another super talented kid from Southern NC named Weston Williams. Weston beat out Dylan Kowalski, Tyler Faulkner, super grom Conner Lester as well as Dillon Mincher. Tons of prizes and points went to all finalists. Good work kids, see ya next weekend.



All of the kids in the Junior final were ripping and most of them still have another year this age bracket. That’s a scary thought for the Pro-Am because these kids surf good enough to take some of those guys out already. Who knows what these kids will be doing next year, but it’s safe to say that it’s gonna be fun to watch. Damn, the Richards family cleaned house at this event. Cam took the Groms and Cole took the Juniors. Cole didn’t take home the bike but if it were my little brother I’d go ahead and use my seniority to snatch it from him anyway. Taking the second spot in this tightly contested final was Wrightsville Beach's own Evan Barton. Evan left Shane Burn, Josh Torres, Nick Capone and Chris Moore behind, but all walked home with a ton of goods for a free day of surfing.



Finally we come to the meat and potatoes of the event, the Pro-Am. Taking the win and bragging rights for the next year was local Wrightsville shredder Matt Gilligan. Gilligan surfed well all the way up to the final where he absolutely blew up, earning the top spot and $500.00 in cash. The rest of the guys dumped a good helping of Busch beer on his head, enough to drive Sean Slater mad. This was a very close final with Shane Upchurch taking second while Rob Cordova, Lucas Rodgers, Michael Powell and Jake Kirshenbaum rounding out the rest.
