OCT 24, 2009 - THE LANE

Volcom Stone's
Greatwhite Surf Series
The Lane, Santa Cruz

The surf had been raging for days and the entire town of Santa Cruz was abuzz with the first coming of the 2009 Greatwhite Surf Series contests to be held at the Lane. With the Cold Water Classic right around the corner, the buzz seamed extra tingley and everyone from the mini groms to the pro rippers were frothing at the chance of getting The Lane with nothing but a few competitors sharing the waves. All divisions rapidly filled, as mini grom questions were slung with rapid fire, "What, when, where, do you have any wax?". Standard operating procedure for the super groms, who started things off with the first heats of the day. Little Brogie Panesi appeared in form in the first round, but it was clear that the swell would not be bone shaking as in days prior, but a more manigeable 3ft with some fun ramps here and there. Sunshine and high energy made up for the lack of perfect surf and carried us through the mid day high tides. The world famous Murph-B-Q was in full force - cooking up breakfast burritos and smoothly transitioning into his trademark tri-tip sandwiches for lunch. Check out all the highlights below.

TJ Mikus stole the show in the Pro-Am Final, with the two best waves, and a smooth incredibly timely air reverse that sealed the deal, and guaranteed him the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day, an extra $50 bucks to go along with his $500 prize purse.

The Panesi brothers were standouts in the Grom division, Brogie (right) blasts the fins out in the final, while Kadin (left) grips his heap of first place prizes.
