Volcom Stones Starfish Surf Series Goldenwest St, HB

Looking at the forecast almost a week out it looked like we’d have some fun little waves to kick off the new Totally Crustaceous Tour at Goldenwest St. in Huntington Beach. However we had no idea what awaited us when we actually pulled up to the beach at the crack of dawn on Friday morning. Driving by the HB Pier on my way to Goldenwest St I glanced over to get a quick look at the waves and suddenly a macking A-Frame of indo like perfection detonated next to the pier. Pulling up to Goldenwest we were greeted by a similar sight with 6-8 ft A-Frames all over the beach and an incredible amount of sea janitors dodging barrels and perfect sections.
We quickly man handled the beach set up so the 180+ competitors could get signed up and the over amping kids could hit the water. After clearing the lineup of the pesky sea sweepers we were ready to go and the first heat of Juniors hit the water at 7 am sharp. As soon as the first heat started, the action was nonstop with competitors pushing the level in every division. The Juniors were surfing at least as well, and sometimes better than a lot of the Pro/Am guys and every were you looked Grom’s were throwing down air reverses like it was going out of style.

The Girls final was up first and hit the water with aggression the likes of which had never been seen. With a completely stacked Girls’ final it was anyone’s game, but in the end it came down to a tooth and nail battle between Jenna Balester and Sarah Taylor. After their recent jaunt to Australia they were both hungry for the win and put on a hair pulling catfight of epic proportions. When the spray cleared Sarah emerged victorious and for her vicious shredding she was bombarded by an insane amount of prizes including a nuts Riviera complete skateboard. Marissa Shaw, Lani Doherty, Shelby Detmers, and Chloe Buckley brought up the back half of the final.

The Groms were up next and once in the water it looked like a bunch of miniature pros. When I was fourteen, standing up and going down the line was enough, but now these kids are punting airs, blowing tail, and throwing down moves most grown adults can’t do. Colin Moran started the heat off strong with a huge score giving him the commanding spot for most of the final. However Josh Giddings snagged a solid set wave which he shredded all the way to the beach giving him the slight edge over Colin. Suddenly Martin Jeri decided that his journey from Peru wasn’t going to waste and blew up with one of the highest scores of the event on a single wave. For Martin’s insane surfing, he won himself a Volcom beach cruiser and enough prizes to push him well over the weight limit on his flight back to Peru. Trevor Thorton, Andrew Jacobson and Jay Christenson rounded out the rest of the final.

In the Juniors division Andrew Doheney was a clear standout and when the final hit this was no exception. However Andrew had to settle for third when Shaw Kobayashi started the final off with a flurry of solid scores. From the beginning it looked like Shaw was the man to beat, that is until Eric Heimstadt found his stride. With one of the highest wave scores of the final already under his belt, Eric decided to let loose and blasted the craziest upside down reverse of the event. He got pitched about 8 feet into the flats after hitting the lip on an overhead wave and managed to stick it perfectly clean, grabbing himself a huge score, the Electric Volt Thrower move of the event, and the win. For his progressive surfing, Eric earned himself a bag bursting with prizes, including a Vestal watch, DVS shoes and heap of other goodies. Bobby Okvist, Jared Cassidy and Josh Morse rounded out the rest of the final.

The Pro/Am dudes were up next and after surfing heat after heat throughout the 12 hr day, the final was a serious battle of endurance. However this didn’t stop the guys from throwing down air reverses and tail throws galore in the 20 minute final. Matt King had to use all the knowledge he had gained from the windblown waves of central cal to deal with the bumpy waves in the final and managed to snag himself third place. Chris Foster kicked the heat off strong with a good midrange score and solid backup to find himself in the commanding spot. But Chase Newsom wasn’t going to let his 12 hour day go to waste and managed to get two back to back high scores on some solid set waves that gave him the edge over Chris, winning him first place, 500 dollars cash, and enough prizes to fill his car for the short trip home. Ricky Whitlock, Robert Patterson and Kyle McGeary surfed unbelievable but had to settle for 4th, 5th, and 6th in the Final.

Thanks to CHIPOTLE for providing an insane lunch for all the competitors!
