OCT 24, 2009 - PINETREES, KAUAI

Volcom Stone's
Pufferfish Surf Series
Pinetrees, Kauai

Stop number two of the Pufferfish Surf Series ran this weekend at Pinetrees on the beautiful island of Kauai. When we arrived on Friday we were greeted with perfect offshore 4ft surf. Everyone was pumped up for the contest, with young and old all snagging some warm up waves that evening. Saturday morning first light brought smaller conditions and knowing that Sunday would be smaller we decided to run Saturday. Never the less the Groms were frothing and we got under way for a day of insane weather, beach antics and action packed surfing.

In the Grom division Curren Caples was our last entry of the day and ended up upsetting a stacked field of some of the best Groms in the state and taking the win. Young Alessa Cuison is coming into her own as she snuck a set of left handers down the beach in the Girls Final. In the Juniors division we saw a lot of early upsets with some of the best Juniors going down early, including the likes of Tanner Hendrickson the winner of this last years VQS World Champs. In the end it was Kauai's own Nathan Carvalho just edging out his younger brother Roy for the win in the wave starved final. Evan Valiere lit up some big turns in the Pro-Am final to impress the judges and claim the $500 Cash for first.

Isaiah Moniz went down in the early rounds, but not before he stuck a sick air reverse and claimed the Electric Volt Thrower move of the day, a pair of shades and $50 cash.

You'll never know what to expect at a Pufferfish event.

Past Volcom VQS Champ Tyler Newton blows the fins out and finishes the day in 2nd place.

"You can't see me fool!"

Kamalei Alexander found himself in overall 3rd place and a qualifying spot for the 2010 VQS World Champs.
