SEPT 27, 2009 - KILL DEVIL HILLS (5TH ST), NC

Cooterfish Surf Series
Kill Devil Hills, NC
Sunday September 27th 2009

The Cooterfish Surf Series has ended in good form. For the second year in a row we were blessed with great surf and decent weather. This event has been my favorite event to run over the last couple of years. The waves have always been good but it’s been the support of the local community that has helped make this event what it is today. So I wanted to start this release off a bit different by saying thanks to everyone who attends, works and surfs in these events. Your help will never go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank You! Here is a quick rundown of the day’s events and happenings. Enjoy!

The Ladies!
Two down with the same girl on top! Maria Kuzmovich blazed through the girls final like a bat outta hell! It wasn’t like she didn’t have anyone nipping at her heals because our runner up Chelsea Grisham almost took out the Cooterfish Champ. It looks like Chelsea will be a threat in the next couple of years; so keep the old eyes peeled for this little lady. Sitting in the middle or 3rd spot was Romy Sideelski. Romy is a wave-shredding machine. While the top three were ripping our bottom three did the same but possibly just had a run of bad luck. Go get em next time ladies! With all respect, our bottom three consisted of a couple of talented young ladies. Bree Klinetop, Brittany Gulmolka and Kim Diggs. See you next year at the Cooterfish!

Groms!
With Easterns finished and the waves pumping, it turned out to be a very talented pack of kids signing up for the event. Most of the finalists from the Easterns made up our Grom Final for this event. Taking wins in both the Easterns Boys division as well as our event was Cam Richards. Cam has been unstoppable and I can’t wait to see what he does at the VQS Champs. Following close behind Cam was Florida’s Daniel Glenn. This was the first time I had a chance to watch Daniel surf and I’m sure he, along with the rest of the pack are going to make our events fun to watch in the future. Taking third and almost taking home the Electric Move of the Day was Pat Schmidt. Pat has been shredding and it showed as he took out last weeks event champ Knox Harris. Andrew Rooney Landed himself in the 4th spot as while Justin Cruteau headed back to Florida with a 6th place showing.

Juniors!
Rupp wins again and again and again! Is this kid ever gonna stop winning things? Hope not! It’s been a long couple of weeks for Nick and over the last two weeks I witnessed him win two VQS events and back up his 2008 Easterns victory with a repeat this year in the Juniors division at the 2009 ESA Easterns. Good Job Nick! While this event showed a ton of good surfers, Nick as I just stated took the win. Close behind was pretty much the entire pack of Juniors. The waves were super fun and the kids were lighting it up. Taking second place was Chris Tucker while Evan Barton secured his spot in the VQS champs by taking the third spot. Wrightsville Beaches own Dylan Kowalski took the 4th spot while Julian Payne and Morgan Level took the back two spots. Good surfing guys! It was fun to watch!

Pro-Am!
This was by far one of the most exciting finals in a long time. It was a seesaw battle from the start with just about everyone getting that first solid score under their belts. Noah Snyder nailed down a solid tube to tailslide combo while Spencer Reagan was flying high off of just about every section he found. It took Michael Powell's combination of two waves, an 8.5 on his first and then in the last 3 minutes of the final a double pit for 10's across the board from the judges. The beach erupted and Michael got a proper beer bath from the rest of the finalist and whoever else were nearby with a cold one in hand. Noah ended up with a runner up finish as well as winning Electric’s Volt Thrower Award. Sitting oh so close behind Noah was California’s own Spencer Reagan. Rounding off the rest of the final was Mark Dawson, Jeff Wildcard Myers and Wrightsville’s mad man Mark Yonkers.
