VQS TOTALLY CRUSTACEOUS
MUSCLE BEACH CHAMPS
After 76 events in 16 countries around the world, the vast field of competitors was narrowed down to 256 for the 2008 VQS World Championships Muscle Beach Party. Each of them qualified in their respective regions and made their way to Newport Beach for this muscular event of steroidal proportions.
The winners of each final with their checks and smiles!
Once all of the gym membership forms were filled out, the fitness center was opened and the intense iron pumping sessions began. Right from the start the competition was strenuous and you could really feel the burn!
As the Muscle Beach Party progressed further, the competition intensified, biceps were strained, veins bulged, eyes popped and even the swell size kept bulking up like it too had been in the gym with its personal trainer. By Sunday there were some brawny sets and a few curling tubes.
Dustin Cuizon's signature snaps took home the win in the pro-am!
The Iron Curlers final was first to get all greased up and hit the stage. These ladies were getting physical and it was a remarkable display of feminine force. Sage Erickson, Kyla Langen and Kelia Moniz were all pumping up the level, but it was Erica Hosseini who put up the most weight and took home the $7,000 and totally buff prize pack.
There were some serious muscles on the beach all weekend!
We knew we were in for a striking display of power plus performance when the Squat Thrusters final headed to the gym for their final session. I have seen a lot of squat thrusting in my life, but never in the same league as this. The all star show featured Dustin Barca, Aaron Cormican, Josh Hoyer, Rat-Boy, Marcelo Trekinho and Kilian Garland. The final was chock-full of muscle tearing action from all of the Squat Thrusters, but it was Kilian Garland who rallied the win with a 512-lb. air reverse.
Andrew Doheny threw down in the final, but fell short on waves and finished forth.
If you thought it was time for the girly man division, you are wrong! The Jock Strap final was one of the most pumped up of the day. The burly Brazilians Sydney Guimmaraes and Caio Ibelli, Hawaiian hulk Keanu Asing and Huntington Beach brute Shayne Nelson gave it their all in the protein packed final. When the final bell rang it was Shayne Nelson who narrowly edged out Keanu Asing for the Win and the $8000 prize.
Monster styled out the first place winner with a brand new Kawasaki ski!
New to the VQS Champs this year was the Electric Muscular Move award. Basically whoever did the most radical maneuver during their heat throughout the event would be awarded a $1,000 prize. The winner was the strapping young sensation Lahiki Minamishin. Lahiki busted an outrageous air reverse in the early rounds of the Jock Strap division, setting the bar early and taking the win at the end of the event.
Some dudes were buffer than others!
The amino acids were really flowing for the Keg Tossers final. This tendon tearing tangle started slow and then got heavier as the final progressed. It could have been anyone’s win, but Albee Layer just edged out Nat Young by one point for the win and the $10,000. James Woods finished in third just two puny points behind the leader with Andrew "Droid Rage" Doheny rounding out the very close final.
Alex Gray boosting a nice double grab in the earlier airshow rounds!
You can’t stop the explosion! You cant stop the power! You cant stop the bulge! Of the Roid Ragers muscle tower! With $15,000 and a Monster Kawasaki Jet Ski up for grabs, this fatiguing final was non-stop anabolic action. Bobby Morris, Alex Gray, Dustin Barca and Dustin Cuizon battled it out in a roid raging, bar bending grand finale. The last heat of the day turned into a battle of the dead-lifting Dustins. Barca displayed some powerful shredding, but was surpassed in the end by Cuizon's quick strikes and precise combinations. When the buzzer sounded, there was little debate about who had taken the Roid Ragers title, the $15,000 and the Monster Energy Kawasaki Jet Ski.
Dustin Barca was on fire the whole event, making two finals: Roid Ragers and Squat Thrusters!
