2012 WILD IN THE PARKS STOP #7, OTTAWA, ON, CANADA
8/8/2012
After a couple of years off it was good to be back in Canada’s capitol for stop #7 of Volcom’s Wild in the Parks tour.

Ottawa holds a sweet spot in the heart of the WITP. The city always provides plenty of antics and Legacy skate park is a classic. For some reason the park creates such a great vibe for the WITP format. It might be graffiti scrolled surface, the mix of street and transition features, or maybe it’s the way the crowd circles around the double set to see who can put it down. One thing is for sure the Ottawa event always produces a serious showdown with the crowd loosing their minds by the end of it.

The 14 and Under Division were put to the task of getting the party started. With zero hesitation this bunch was stepping up to all 3 WITP zones. Backside 180s down the double set, blunt slides on the rail, and tail slides on the big ledge were just a few of the tricks making the crowd shake their heads in disbelief. It was a battle but in the end Ryan Beaulieu was awarded victor with Carter Grandin coming in 2nd and Matt Racine in 3rd.

A new aspect of the WITP is that we are awarding the stand out 10 and under (Lil’ Monkey) competitor for mixing it up with the big dogs. The Lil’ Monkey that caught the judges eye was Joseph Dizon. We hooked him up with a backpack full of Volcom goodies.

The 15 and Over Division was next to get down to business. Taking cue from the young guns they knew they had to step it up. Soon enough man sized tricks were dropping throughout the park: front blunt to shuv out, a casper flip down the double, and a kick flip back blunt were part of the mayhem being put on display. Once all the scores were tallied Scott Borkowski came out on top with Steve Livingston and Pat LaFlamme in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Just before the curtain was closed there was the final performance: The Open Division. The crowd gathered in anticipation, board barriers set, record buttons at the ready… Hard flip front board, Bang! Nose manny up, across, and down with a nollie heel out, Bang! Front 360 varial down the double, Bang! After the dust had settled and scores lined up, hometown hero Mitch Barrette walked away with gold. Nipping at his heels was Rylan Shaver 2nd and Ryan Racine 3rd. It was a spectacle to behold, make sure to check out the video.
