2012 WILD IN THE PARKS STOP #8, CABO ROJO, PUERTO RICO
8/22/2012
The Puerto Rico Wild in the Parks took place at Cabo Rojo Skate Park for stop #8 of the 2012 tour. The day of destruction: August 18, 2012!

This was round 2 for WITP and PR. After an amazing event last year we were excited to see if Puerto Rico could step up the awesome. This year didn’t disappoint. A new park with gnarly features, a huge frothing crowd, and Puerto Rico’s finest skate talent was all part of the recipe for success. Sprinkles in the morning be damned, it was time to get wild!

The 14 and Under Division were first to take to the park. With zero hesitation, these pint-sized shredders were attaching all three contest zones: sending it down the 9 stair, blasting the pyramid, and greasing the ledge from end to end. The showstopper was Rio Batán’s 50-50 to kick flip out on the massive zone 2 ledge. Rio was awarded top honors for his effort with Hector Ortiz taking home 2nd place and Brandom Rivera 3rd.

9 Stairs? No Problem.

Also mixing it up with this bunch was our Lil’ Monkey Division (10 and Under). One of the largest showings we’ve had so far on the tour. Also particularly inspiring was the 2 young ladies Vianez Morales and Gamar Matienzo who were mixing it up with the big boys. Excited to see what the future holds for this group, ripping no doubt.

Next to take the stage was the 15 and Over Division. Taking their cue from the young guns it was time to step it up. Getting techy with a heel flip boardslide, lightning fast 50-50 front shuv out, and hard flips gone easy. The crowd lost control when Jeremy Perez landed his tre flip down the 9 set SKIER style, focusing his board but somehow riding away! Once the scores were tabulated Antonio Malagón came out on top with Anthony Soto taking silver and Joshua Casiano 3rd, a solid performance by the entire bunch.

The Open division was set to the task of closing the day out. On top of that we assigned zone 3 to the massive double set. This mammoth set is one of the largest features we’ve used for WITP. With baited breath the crowd assembled in anticipation. Ghetto bird on the pyramid- BANG! Kick back lip on the 9 rail- BANG! Flawless tre flip down the double- BANG! The hammers were dropping and the crowd was working itself into a frienzy but the deal was sealed when Robert Lopez put down a front salad to back 180 out. This along with many a mind melting tricks earned him the champion title for the day. Nipping at his heels was clean steaze Yariel Melendez swaggering away with 2nd and Hector John Marti shut the contest down with a beauty of a nollie heel, earning him 3rd.
