This past weekend was the first annual Volcom Meadows Pro Invitational. There are a ton of things that make this event special. The skatepark it self is nestled high up in the Sierra Mountains, a beautiful land full of icy rivers, tall mountain peaks and scalding hot springs.

Jimmy the Greek, halfway through a very long frontside lipslide.
The skatepark was completed this past fall and was built in memory of Jeff Anderson, who while alive had made it his goal to erect a skatepark in Mammoth. The park does not disappoint. It is a massive concrete wonderland built by Grindline. To put it bluntly, this park separates the men from the boys. It is massive, gnarly and unforgiving. The contest this past weekend brought in some of the best pool skaters around and they put on a show for all who came to watch.

The park was packed all day!
During the event, the perimeter of the park was lined with kids, skaters and families who came from all over to check out the action. The park was getting ripped to shreds by the likes of Chris Senn, Dennis Busenitz, Benji Galloway, Chad Bartie, Mike Petersen, Kyle Berard, Tim Johnson, Steve Reeves, Jimmy The Greek and many more.

Dennis Busenitz, speedy 5-0 through a corner.
It was a jam format, with no more than 4 guys to a heat. More than that got dangerous with the collision factor. We ran 7 qualifying heats and then took it down to three 3 man heats for the final. The cut was tight. There were guys like Kyle Berard and Ben Krahn who killed it in the qualifier but did not make the cut.

Collin Provost took a liking to this fish.
Chris Senn took a heavy slam at the start of his finals heat and proceeded to watch the rest of the event. Steve Reeves lit the place up with fast and creative lines. He was tweaking his airs, doing no comply tails slides and riding with reckless speed, head banging to Slayer and getting it done the whole time. Jimmy the Greek tore the place apart, doing one burly trick after another.

Stevie Reese skates just like his style in music, fast and hard. Highspeed frontslide 5-0 to fakie.
Benji Galloway was pretty much unstoppable from the moment he stepped into the park and warmed up in flip-flops. Yes, airs, liptricks and a full bag of tricks while wearing sandals. When the shoes went on it was pure destruction. He did twice as many tricks anyone else and in the end it totally deserved the sterling silver trophy chalice stuffed with $10.000 in cash. He partied with us at the campsite after the event and apparently drove straight to Huntington Beach on Sunday morning to the Soul Bowl contest where he got 4th. Dude is on a mission.

Tim Johnson drove all the way from Florida and took home $1,000. Slob air.
The contest went off without a hitch. Tons of people came out to skate and camp. Volcom Meadows, our newly dubbed campsite was full of people every night that came for the event. We took over a large grassy field, had about 75 tents in a big ring and had a blast in the dirt. Nihilist even rolled up and let loose their fury on Friday night while the campfire raged. There were no showers for anybody all weekend. We swam in the rivers and went straight to the park every morning bright and early with the rise of the sun.
It was a great weekend, and next year will surely be better. As we say: come one, come all. See you all next year in beautiful Mammoth Lakes, California.
