We recently caught up with one of the top surf shops in Honolulu, HI... Blue Hawaii. Women's product buyer, Krista Alvarez took a moment to share some inside info on the shop and her thoughts on the retail business.

WHAT INTRIGUES YOU ABOUT THE RETAIL BUSINESS?
What is intriguing about retail is that it’s constantly changing. We get to work with
customers’ different styles and needs. Also, I like interacting with different kind of people.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CARRYING VOLCOM?
The company has been carrying Volcom around 12 years
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VOLCOM PIECE?
Right now my favorite Volcom piece is the 'Roller Girls Banded Tank'
DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL CUSTOMER.
Our typical customer is active in surfing and skating but is also more of a “fashionista” and
artistic.
WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN THE MARKET AND WHAT ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS
ASKING FOR?
Trends we’re still seeing are vests, skinny jeans, worn denim, cardigans, and plaids.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY PLAYING IN THE STORE?
Employee’s mix; right now its Empire of the Sun.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR STORE UP WITH THE TRENDS?
I keep up with trends by watching a lot of high-end fashion shows, etc.
WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP SPECIAL AND WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR CUSTOMER
COMING BACK?
Our employees; they are all active and into art/music/fashion so they can relate with a lot
of different customers.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VOLCOM AD OR AD-CAMPAIGN AND WHY?
Since Fall 09 is my favorite line I’ve seen from Volcom, I’d say I’m most excited for the Fall
09 girls’ ads. It’s edgier which makes it more Volcom and more distinctive.
