 |
We recently took some time to check out Outer Banks Boarding Company in Nags Head, North Carolina. We spent time chatting with Whitney Hines, the women's buyer for Outer Banks and found out a little more about this cool shop. The next time you find yourself in Nags Head we highly recommend you check this place out!
RETAILER NAME:
Outer Banks Boarding Company
Interview with Whitney Hines – Women’s Buyer
ADDRESS:
103 East Morning View Place – Nags Head, NC 27959
OPENING HOURS:
10am – 7pm Daily
When did your store open?
2002
What intrigues you about the retail business?
To me, working retail I feel like I get to help people feel better about themselves. Whether
helping them find a cute new dress, or selling them some accessories they truly need, it’s
nice to talk to people and hope they leave encouraged and prepared for the world. Plus,
my dad was a used-car salesman… so it’s kinda in my blood.
How long have you been carrying Volcom?
Volcom has been a key brand since we opened.
What is your favorite Volcom piece on the floor right now?
The Sadie Denim Skinny Pant is my personal favorite, but all Volcom denim and dresses are
great!
Describe your typical customer?
In the summer time we have customers from all over the country. Most people come to
the Outer Banks every year as a tradition. We typically have lots of families with teenagers
and a lot of college students. In the off-season we have our locals, which are all ages, but
mainly high school and college-age girls.
Do you feel like you have customers that come in specifically looking for Volcom?
Absolutely! Volcom is the most sought after brand on the girl’s side in our shop. The girls
who come in looking for Volcom know they love the way the jeans fit and love the brand
as a whole. From keychains to socks to hoodies, people can’t get enough.
What trends are you seeing in the market place and what are your customers asking for?
Dresses and denim are our best sellers through every season… no matter how cold or hot
it is outside. Right now we have a lot of people looking for skirts (preferably high-
waisted), skinny jeans, and long sleeve flannel shirts.
What’s your favorite Veeco Productions movie?
Well honestly, I don’t have one… but my husband told me to say
Magna Plasm. He said
it was one of the first surf movies to get all artsy, and Bruce Irons was shredding, haha.
What music are you currently playing in the store?
We use Pandora, so we listen to all kinds of music… Lemon Jelly, Postal Service, The
Killers…
How do you keep your store up with the trends?
I mainly try to listen to what people are asking for, check out what people are wearing, and
read Lucky Magazine. I get the young girls in the shop to mark the catalogs as well… and
I totally trust my rep too!
What makes your shop special and what do you do to keep your customer coming back?
Our customer service is incredible! There’s nothing worse than a shop full of snobs.
Being friendly, helpful, and fun makes sales a lot easier. Getting to know people and what
they like is essential so the next time they come back you know how to help them.
What is your favorite Volcom ad or ad-campaign and why?
The swim ad-campaigns are always great. My favorite was the water skiers… funny, cute,
and original.
Do you have any memorable Volcom experiences, whether it be trade shows, promos, etc?
We just hosted the Volcom B.S. movie premier at the shop with a cookout in our yard.
There were tons of super-stoked kids!
Thanks you for taking time to participate, any last words?
Please shop locally… you are loved at OBBC!
