Week 15: Easy Love "The Echo" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club

Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 15: Easy Love - "The Echo"   Grab the free download Justine Brown was already known as the great drummer and vocalist in her sister Chelsea's band, Summer Twins, when she formed Easy Love. "I started Easy Love about two years ago when I started writing my own songs," says Justine. "Now I have a live band and I recorded an album and released it with Burger." Justine played all the instruments on Easy Love's self-titled debut album that was released in February. Justine's relationship with Burger Records goes back practically to the beginning. "We used to play with Sean and Lee's band, Thee Makeout Party," explains Justine. "It was before they had the record store, so a long time ago." The Burger Records store opened in October 2009. Burger co-founder Lee Rikard remembers, "Justine is one of my favorite people. We've known her since her teenage days in the Riverside girl garage band The Scandells! We've also been in love with the Summer Twins since their inception and have released their amazing catalog on LP, CD, 7" vinyl and cassette." Since the early days, Justine has found her place in the Burger universe and has travelled along on tours like the Burger Caravan, playing shows that featured eclectic lineups. "That's what I like about Burger, the variety of music… people from all over," she says. "We had to pay our dues and work our way up and it eventually lead to playing the Burgerama stage… which was, like, hundreds of people. It was kind of scary." Lee adds, "Justine is always creating, constantly evolving, growling ever so lovely." Easy Love is admittedly a little less rambunctious than some of their Burger label mates. "We definitely have a different kind of style," says Justine. "I feel like we're not as super punk and, like, crazy… as people and as musicians… a little bit more mellow, but we definitely can rock out!" Meet the 15 #ThisFirst New Hires From Around the World

We weren't quite sure what the reaction would be when we decided to ask the Internet, "What's your 'this'?", to say we were pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. You, everyone who submitted an entry into the #ThisFirst contest, completely blew us away. We were flooded with over 10,000 photos, videos and statements of passion and what being able to put that passion first in life would mean. Entries spanned a variety of topics, the most common being art, photography and travel, while music, surfing and skateboarding followed closely behind. But it wasn't just artistic globetrotting types with a passion for boardsports that entered, people pursuing passions as varied as sustainable farm to table food sourcing, charity work, animal rescue, make-up artistry and even crochet, all shared their stories with us. To pick just 60 finalists from the thousands of entries who would go on to do a video call with Volcom, our panel of judges sequestered themselves in an office for a week to go through everyone's entries. The deeper they got, the less it felt like they were going through contest entries and the more like they were parsing the results of a massive survey which was beginning to reveal some trends; A lot of you like to take photos and want to travel, especially Australians. Aspirations to become a successful YouTuber were not uncommon. And entrants in Asia had a tendency more than any other region to focus on charitable giving. But if we thought making our selection of the 60 finalists was hard, narrowing that field of finalists down to 15 winners was even more difficult and we appreciate everyone's patience (yes, we saw your comments on Instagram) awaiting the announcement. Before introducing the winners below, we just wanted to take a final moment and express how truly humbled we were by all the finalists and what it is that is driving you to purse your 'this'. To you and everyone else who entered and gave us a peek into your lives, we cannot thank you enough! Now without further ado... Agenda Festival with Burger Records, The Garden, Fat Tony, Nobunny, No Parents

This weekend at the Long Beach Convention Center, Volcom and Burger Records put on a first-of-its-kinda show during the Agenda Festival trade show. For years, trade shows have earned their spot as the go-to venue where brands and retailers meet, looking to show their new lines or connect potential business. Days full of walking the floor to see new product, running into old friends, and (hopefully) jotting down some new orders were more of the norm. While it's easy to fall victim to the routine year-after-year, Volcom sought to take a new direction this year and team up with the good dudes over at Burger Records to present a music stage featuring some of our favorite Burger bands as well as our buddy Fat Tony who is now living in Los Angeles. "Our friend Dan Bush (who we were in Thee Makeout Party! with) works for a company that does Agenda and asked if we wanted a booth," noted Burger Records' Sean Bohrman. "We told Volcom we were gonna have a booth there and since we're doing a clothing line with them in October, we decided to team up and do a big show there! It came together in less than a month!" Kicking things off on the stage was Cowgirl Clue who just released her Cyber Singles track Utopia, followed by Fat Tony with iLL Faded providing the beats, and No Parents and Nobunny who got the crowd loose for headliners and Burger alums, The Garden, who absolutely destroyed their set. We’d say the experiment paid off, and was great to work with our pals at Burger and to see The Garden who played our first ever event we did with Burger back in 2013 in our skatepark. We kicked things off early in the day to the eager crowd. Free-flowing good vibes and eternal sunshine. Cowgirl Clue iLL Faded and Fat Tony No Parents Cowgirl Clue No Parents No Parents jamming! Nobunny not jamming... yet. Nobunny's set got the crowd moving. No Parents Nobunny. No pants either. The youth. The Garden's Wyatt and Fletcher holding it down on the Volcom x Burger Records stage. It's true, people love The Garden. The Garden set was one of the highlights of the day. The Garden Tyler the Creator showed up to watch the entire Garden set (he was performing at Agenda Festival). Mac DeMarco also showed up for The Garden set. Shattered Faith's Steven Shears (The Garden brothers' father) seen in the black hat hung with Tyler and Mac to watch his boys rip! Doing it right at Agenda Festival! Thank you to everyone who came out and saw the show! Check out Cyber Singles, Volcom's newest music releases with Burger Records, and be on the lookout for a Volcom x Burger Records clothing collection dropping in the fall!

Week 14: Distractor "Six Foot Moon" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club

Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 14: Distractor - "Six Foot Moon"   Grab the free download Somewhere around mid-to-late 2014, in vocalist and trumpeter Glen's garage, keyboardist Will Sipos came up with a catchy melody on one of his tiny toy synths leftover from the 80s. Glen began singing along and unexpectedly, this turned into the first Distractor song. Glen came up with the band name and that's how the band begun. The idea was to play fun and simple music to distract from the harsh realities of life. Colin Mckibbin was usually there in the garage with them and joined Distractor on the ukulele. Soon after, Ronnie Dunmore on guitar and Sean Campos on bass joined the band. "We played our first legitimate show at La Cave in Costa Mesa to a sold-out crowd," remembers Ronnie. "Glen would play miniature blaring trumpet solos in between verses, while we played along reading our handwritten sheet music. It was a lot of fun." Distractor's first album Devotion was released in March 2015 and currently preparing the release of the Six Foot Moon EP, which was recorded at Volcom Studio. "We have the second album mixed and ready to be mastered, so just waiting on plans for the release on that," says Ronnie. "We’re very excited!" Distractor were quickly dealing with a tragedy that almost ended the band. "Right when we found clear direction and reasoning for what we wanted to be as a band, we lost our captain," explains Ronnie. Glen passed away in October 2015 after only a year of guiding the ship. "Glen's approach to music was not normal. He didn't really want to start a band in the first place, so the ideas and emotions he brought to the table were very funny and inspiring." Ronnie describes the loss as "a period of time when we felt lost.. we had to somehow fill his shoes without actually putting them on." Guitarist and vocalist Levi Prairie joined the band to help with vocals and added new flavor to the music. This new lineup initially performed under a different name. "We needed to keep playing music together and we knew it wasn't in the form of Distractor," he explains. "We let Distractor rest in the garage for a year and brought a new name, Blue Flowers, out to shows. At the time, we thought we may never play as Distractor again until one day we decided to test this new musical bond we developed with Levi by starting from scratch and writing all new material. We were even able to include some of Glen's lyrics and unfinished songs. Now that we were all contributing, it started to feel like Distractor again and we feel that Glen would be proud to see us playing these new songs. So here we are." Since falling into the Burger Records fold, Distractor has embraced the label ethos and made the most of the relationship. "It's been great working with Burger. We are honored that they have taken us under their wing," says Will. "They set us up with some shows at SXSW which was fun. We like being able to share our music with all the Burger fans and also playing alongside some whacky and talented bands. Burger has become something bigger than just a record label and we're all lucky to have this type of thing to enjoy and contribute to in our lives." "Distractor is one of our favorite bands," says Burger Records' Sean Bohrman. "It's like Devo and Talking Heads in outer space. When we first met Distractor we booked them for one of our local shows, but found out that the lead singer, Glen Christiansen, had passed away unexpectedly at the age of 25. Distractor carries on in memory of Glen and continues to blow minds and spread the love of the Spaceman. The story of Distractor is one too long to tell in this brief blurb, so please watch this short doc on one of our favorite bands!" A Floating Dock in The Middle of a Surf Break - “The Dock”

“The Dock” is an exemplary piece of outlandish and strange antics we sometimes chase. It’s not that we want to… we have to. Breaking up the monotony of your daily videos cycling your feed to provide something different. Something we felt the need to do. What is The Dock? A 100-foot floating dock that we put in the middle of a surf break and invited a select crew to try out: Noa Deane, Balaram Stack, Ozzie Wright, Mitch Coleborn, Yago Dora, and Imai Devault. Sound enticing or ridiculous? Probably both. From the video you can see how sketchy the execution was, but the preparation was just as strenuous. The danger involved was also on everyone’s minds as the set up began. “It would just kill you if it hit you, yeah?” said Noa. The wires, the ropes, the waves, the unpredictability of the anchor were all threatening variables. Ozzie recalls, “The Dock’s been scary. At one stage I just came up, got my board, and saw it coming right at me. But I like the chaos of it.” What was once a long and arduous journey has finally come to fruition. And we’re truly passionate about. We hope you enjoy! Standing on a floating dock with an 8ft wave approaching can be a little frightening! Dock Lobster, Rattle Snake, Grey Mamba... call it what you want, this thing can be ANGRY! "Sittin on a dock in the line up, waisting time." The guys were psyching and splitting peaks.. Here's Imai with no option but straight! “I was kinda just stuck and wasn't sure what to do because Noa was going right and Yago left, and I was just stuck in the middle. So, I thought I could try to outrun the thing to the end and just jump off and go straight, but the wave caught up to me and knocked me right off my feet. I slid for what felt like forever haha, but it was probably equal to like 10 feet, but I have never laughed so hard I think ever!” -Imai Noa Deane was doing things no one has ever done before. Backside tail tap on the dock! Imai decided to take a dip! Balaram had his fair share of spills! See video for his wipeout. “The dock was one of those novelty things that you dream about. It was like the rock jump in One Hundred and Fifty Six Tricks that I watched Ozzie do a thousand times.... just a man-made version.” -Balaram Smiles all around! The guys claimed this to be one of the funnest thing they've ever done. L to R: Willy Aliotta, Yago Dora, Noa Deane, Balaram Stack, Ozzie Wright, Imai Devault. Yago Dora flew in straight from the Fiji Pro for just one day and didn't waste any time, he was going bonkers! It was really crowded on that dock! Yago is wearing the Macaw Mod Boardshorts. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! Balaram doing some sort warm-up stretch?! "Balaram jumped up and went six feet in the air then landed on the wire, so sketchy! It whips right at the end because it’s connected to a cable which adds extra tension.” -Noa Ozzie showing off his bag of 156 Tricks! From land it looked like they were walking on water. It was surreal. We lucked out and scored this peak for days straight with not a soul in sight. Ozzie being Ozzie and taking things to the next level! “The dock was angry! It wanted to get us, but we were too quick! It was a classic rumble trying to hustle our way on there altogether.” -Ozzie The Dock is fun and really sketchy at the same time. After all, what’s fun without a little fear?! Here, Mitch Coleborn tries to escape disaster.

Why I Do 'This' with Jesse Gross of Remote Year
We're partnering with the crew at Mic.com to produce a series of videos featuring individuals' inspiring stories of becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable when they decided to make their passion their priority. In this inaugural episode, we explore the moment when Jesse Gross decided to quit his finance job in New York City and set out to work for the start up, Remote Year. Providing individuals the ability to travel the world in a group for 12 months as each works remotely, Remote Year offered Jesse the opportunity to work for a company who's mission aligned with his own, allowing him to get out and explore the world without ever being chained to a desk again. As we found in our #ThisFirst contest, one of the things people are most passionate about is travel and to really explore the world and its different cultures. Yet being able to make that a reality is often hindered by the ability to afford it. Such the conundrum exists where one needs a job to be able to afford to travel, but once one has a job and can afford to travel, one no longer has the time. Jesse and Remote Year offer both an inspiration and a service to help others take the leap to put their 'this' first.

Our DIY Guide To Turning Your Chinos into a One-of-A-kind pair of pants
We're here to show you how to take an ordinary pair of chinos and turn them into a one-of-a-kind, dazzling pair of pants! All it takes is a little imagination and patience. The first step to customizing your pants or any piece of clothing for that matter, is to have a game plan. Know what you want to achieve before you jump into it because once you start, there's no going back. WHAT YOU NEED: A piece of clothing (we chose our favorite Volcom Frochickie chinos) A pair of scissors Any drawing tool (we chose Sharpies) A pencil Some inspiration (either print out what you want to draw or use your phone) Choose a spot to start your first drawing and that can work as your guideline for the rest of the pant. I chose to draw lips, inspired by an image I found on Pinterest. A combination of text and illustrations was my ultimate goal for the pants, so my next step was to choose a phrase to write and how to write it. I chose Volcom's famous tagline, "True To This" and decided that drippy letters would look the coolest. Googling "drip letters" and led me to the perfect guide for my text. Once I finished with all drawings and text, I moved on to the next phase of customization: cutting the pants to get a raw hem. I chose to do an uneven approach by cutting the front of the pants higher than the back. I didn't use any rulers or guidelines for straight lines, I wanted it to look edgy and not perfect. Start by cutting above the hemline, all the way across. Next, grab the front of the pants and cut upward to your desired length and then cut across and then downwards. The finished product! Now go show off all your hard work and DIY talent. Shop the Frochickie Chino Ankle Pant. It comes in multiple colors and patterns to fit every personality! Also available is the exclusive Georgia May Jagger Volcom X GMJ Frochickie Pant.

Limited Release Clothing Artifacts Designed By Noa Deane
In the past five years, Noa Deane has made some serious noise. He has dropped some of the world's most talked about surf clips, destroyed a couple of big budget surf films (amongst bigger budget names), won the Surfer Poll Andy Irons Breakthrough Award, landed in hot water with some hilarious loose-lipped raw dogging, recorded a solo album, and has been unapologetically juvenescent throughout it all. At a time when surfing has never been more corpo, Noa represents the antidote to the establishment. He’s the kicking out of the jams. He’s Blank Generation X reincarnate. He’s Volcom tomorrow, today. Noa Deane signed with Volcom at the start of 2017 and it couldn’t have been a better fit for the brand. He’s an artist, musician, classic character, ripping surfer and skater, and all around good bloke! We gave Noa the opportunity to create a few of his own tees and boardshort and we're stoked with the outcome. Noa has been a fan of Volcom since he can remember. He’s inspired by the brand's history and early 90s' Youth Against Establishment messaging. Noa’s got really interesting taste, he likes what he likes and he’s not scared to voice his opinion. With that, Noa selected a less premium shirt with a dry hand feel, just a good ol' classic tee! He also wanted a boardshort that was unique and different, so we took two colors of our Mag Vibes Stoneys and created his very own. Week 13: Dabble "Free Time" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 13: Dabble - "Free Time"   Grab the free download Dabble is a band of friends that have recently relocated to the burgeoning Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles. It didn't take long before Burger Records, who seem to have ears everywhere, caught on to their self-described Neu Dream Hip-Pop sound. As it turns out, Dabble was quite familiar with the record label. "I was just 15 years old when I first heard about Burger,"" says guitarist and vocalist Daniel Bonilla. "The instores [at Burger] were the most incredible shows. It was always like, if there was something cool going on in Southern California, Burger was behind it," says bassist and vocalist Danielle Evans. "It’s definitely popular with the all-ages crowd," adds Daniel. "Everybody knows Burger!" Dabble originally formed in 2014 as an experimental two-piece with Daniel and guitarist/vocalist David von Hegedus, and they released a self-titled debut EP soon after. By the time of EP II, they had filled out the sound by adding Danielle Evans, Jordan Fielder on drums, and Austin Pacheco on synths. With a full band in place, Dabble seems to be surprising audiences and making new fans wherever they go. "Dabble came out of nowhere for me," says Burger Records' Sean Bohrman. "I saw them play at the Burger Bowl festival a few years ago and I was blown away. Lee had booked them on the show so I had never seen them. I was listening to their set and they covered The Cranberries' "Dreams" and I was hooked. Afterward, we rereleased their first EP cassette on Burger and did a few more shows before they started self-recording their debut album which is coming out soon [it's out now, it's called Touch, listen on Dabble's bandcamp] and it's amazing! Good people, great band - can't ask for more than that!" The good vibes are mutual as we await the release of their LP Touch. "They [Burger] are just real music lovers and down to earth people," says Daniel. "It's rare to find that sometimes, and we appreciate it," Danielle explains. "We're Burger newbs, but they've been really nice to us," says Daniel.
