Spending time in Quebec always means there is fun to be had! Every year the PBRJ there is one of our favorites on the tour. The French hospitality is great, the architecture is amazing, the poutine is second to none and the riding is top notch. Conveniently enough for us, Mont Avila is only about 45 minutes from the French mecca of Montreal. Cathy Krcevinac and Volcom’s Christina Campbell were kind enough to take us out on the town and show us many of the sights and sounds the city has to offer. Montreal is over 300 years old and as a result is full of huge stone and brick buildings. The skate/snow scene is thriving and producing some of the best rippers out there. To make the situation event better, the Montreal area received nearly 2 ft of snow while we were in the area. I grew up riding at Mont Saint-Sauveur, but was never privy to such a bountiful amount of the white stuff all at once!

The Mont Avila PBRJ began at 10am on Saturday with the 15 and Under Division. Any thoughts that these guys would be easing into the day were dashed as they blew out of the starting gates with hunger and confidence! Despite the long hike, shreds were hustling up to the top of the drop in area for extra speed! The flat-down rail was the first to be annihilated as riders made gapping to the down look easy.
Next up, the 16 and Over Division grabbed centre stage and did their best to impress our elite panel of judges (JP Belanger, Tyler Ellement, Eric Gravenish). It is difficult to say when and where is happened, but at some point things between the riders and the rails got personal! The 16 and over riders appeared to be possessed as they relentlessly attacked the three rails! F/S and B/S 270s to board/front boardslides were thrown down with reckless precision! (?)
Obviously inspired, the girls picked the ball up at the 20 and razzle-dazzled their way into the end zone! The Girl’s Division at the Avila PBRJ consisted of far-and-away the best riders we’ve seen thus far on the North American tour! It was insane. Technical ability and style were through the roof and gave the judges a hard time!
Before we could say, “those girls ripped” the Open Division was off and shredding! Volcom’s own Jordan Bell was in town from Vancouver and definitely had his work cut out for him. It was clear from the starting horn that there would be no easy victories this day. In an effort impress the judges, the Open riders were pushing it with 450s, nollie back lips and front nose switch up to back tails!
Merci beaucoup to Marie-Helene Sauriol, Alex St-Pierre and the crew at MSSI for all their hard work and PBRJ love. Thanks to Top of the World’s Eric Dionne for doing a great job on the mic, as well as JP Belanger, Tyler Ellement and Eric “Gravity” Gravenish for being hard to please judges. Thanks also to Christina Campbell and Cathy Krcevinac for being the hostesses with the mostesses! Thanks to Melanie Dewitt for tabulating and Danny Koriath for being a jack of all trades. Last but not least, thanks to Celtek gloves for supporting the event with prizes.
