Costa Rica's Gold - Surf Team Goes South!
Brand-new styles and colorways available now: Shop Boardshorts | Shop Swimwear So we took a trip to Costa Rica to shoot our all-new Fall boardshorts & swimwear collections, and instead of ending the story right now with "and the rest is history," we'd like to give you a little insight into our majestic journey to the rugged Central American country. Enter Balaram Stack, Coco Ho, Nate Tyler, Maud Le Car, Ryan Burch, Quincy Davis, and Andrew "Droid" Doheny. Picture a desolate rainforest and narrow unstructured dirt roads echoed by a variety of bird chips and animal calls only to be triumphed by thoughts racing through your head of "where's the beach and how fast can we get there." 3,400+ miles from the nearest home in California, obvious transplants (no help from Balaram & Droid's bleached hair), and a crew full of expensive surfboards and camera equipment is your scene. photos by Tom Carey Quickly finding the way to our newly-found two-week home w/ an epic pool inside a quaint little village, we linked up with local legend Tony Roberts who is a mastermind that paved the way for the community down here by designing skateparks and running various surf tours. After ripping through some fun spots inside the village, and getting weird in the neighboring jungle, we hopped on a friend's boat and made our voyage to the famous Witch's Rock. For any surfer, Witch's is a bucket list mission and our journey there was one for the books! Witch's Rock Our goal was to shoot the team in our new boardshorts and swimwear collections, get some rad action shots, explore the land, and simply have a good time on this journey through a quest for spiritual intoxication. And we got that. But we got more, a lot more. Take a ride with us through a captivating feel-good photo book from our Costa Rican adventure: Droid: pro surfer, pro model. Interview with Coco Ho
We had a chance to catch up with our surf rockstar, Coco Ho, and ask her some questions. Here's what our girl had to say... Which waves/ spots currently on tour best showcase a surfers potential? I think different waves/locations on tour show strengths and weaknesses for every individual, but it seems every year the divide gets smaller and smaller, every surfer on tour these days is so well rounded in all types of waves and locations. Is there a wave that better showcases women’s vs mens?  Men definitely shine in waves of consequence like Tahiti and Pipeline and the women have really been stepping it up and showing the world how good they are at waves like Snapper and Bells. I think having events together the women have learned a lot from the men's tour in regards to innovative and progressive surfing in heats. These days it's not uncommon to see women throwing down big combos and airs in heats.  Name the most impressive moment on tour that’s happened so far this year (mens or women’s)? To be honest the most impressive moment would have to be what happened in the final at J-Bay. Impressive to see that another competitor, in this case Julian Wilson, putting their own life in jeopardy to save another competitor. This showcased how deep all the men and women's friendships are on this tour. To be put in a situation like that and what their natural instincts were in that moment - that's true heroism and that to me is the most impressive moment in surf to date, period. What is one note/ word of encouragement or advice you give to every single person you work with?  "POSITIVE reinforcement” I really want to instil in every surfer I work with a very strong self belief in their ability, no matter what the conditions are like or what score they need. That trust needs to come from them being confident in their own decision making. Having good preparation and sticking to a solid routine will see you compete at your best….. Training, do you do it? Ratio of training to actual surfing?  Yes train the body and the mind.  The tour is gruelling and you need to stay on top of your health if you are going to succeed also eating heathy is a must. Actual surfing is the best training you can do, but to get the edge then you need to work hard whether it be full on gym sessions, Swimming, Yoga etc   …….. "hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” Name three toughest waves on tour to wire?  The Box (Margaret River), Chopes ( Tahiti), Pipeline (Hawaii) The three most fierce women’s competitors on the tour right now?  Sally Fitzgibbons, Carissa Moore and Courtney Conlogue

Boarding For Breast Cancer
To us, boarding isn’t just a weekend activity or momentary thrill. It brings us a sense of freedom, but more importantly a healthy and active lifestyle. These are also the building blocks of B4BC-Boarding for Breast Cancer, a non-profit foundation that brings awareness, education, support, and early-prevention to individuals and communities. Their ultimate vision is to celebrate life at every turn, both on and off a board and to inspire youth into positive styles of living. Today we get to talk to our snowboard team rider Elena Hight, who is a B4BC Snow Ambassador, along with Coco Ho, our surf team rider. How long have you been affiliated with B4BC? Elena: I have been an ambassador for B4BC for about 3 years. Out of all the organizations , why have joined this on? What attracted you to B4BC? Elena: I was attracted to B4BC because of their mission to not only educate young people about breast cancer and how it can effect them, but how B4BC believes that preventing breast cancer begins with living a healthy, active lifestyle. I truly believe that living a healthy, active lifestyle is the key to fighting so many diseases that can negatively effect our health, so I was very excited to partner with an organization that is actively spreading that message. Has breast cancer effected anyone close to you? Elena: I have been lucky enough to not have been effected by breast cancer in my lifetime yet. Name one female in the world you look up to/highly respect and why? Elena: I am extremely inspired by Serena and Venus Williams. They both overcame so much adversity to become the incredible worldwide known athletes they are today. I think its very admirable how they have taken their athletic careers to the next level and inspire women today on so many levels. Which female in the world do you look up to and highly respect? Coco: Thats so hard to choose! Beyonce and/or Sharapova for a lot of the same reasons- I love their style in what they do (simply the best!) Their ambition and passion for winning or being the best is present but not over bearing. They are stylish and super feminine when the time is right. They live their lives publicly in the most professional way. The perfect girls in my eyes.   Because no style makes you feel as good as one that’s created for a good cause, Volcom snow has partnered up with Boarding for Breast Cancer to offer our limited edition outerwear. Not only do these exclusive pieces include a unique B4BC print specifically designed to raise awareness, we will support your purchase by donating $1 to the foundation for each garment sold. It’s a simple way to make your day on the hill that much more meaningful. Shop the Astrid Gore-Tex Jacket here: http://bit.ly/Zodxpg

Coco Ho at Swatch Pro Trestles
Here we are in the middle of the Swatch Pro Contest. This event is stop No. 7 on the 2014 Women's Championship Tour. Not only is this event an important stop in finding this year's world surfing crown, but an opportunity for surfers to gain vital points towards re-qualification. Our girl, Coco Ho pulled through in the non-elimination Round 3 of the Swatch Pro Trestles Event last Wednesday. Coco had the lead until Carissa Moore reeled a big 8.97. In the last moments Ho scored a wave that gave her the win by only a few hundredths of a point, advancing her to the Quarterfinals. We're rooting for you Coco ! ! !
