Week 9: Meow Twins "Ratchet Witch" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 9: Meow Twins - "Ratchet Witch"   Grab the free download Meow Twins are another great young band to emerge from the early days of Burger Records. Formed with two singers, aka Meow Twins, Candra Edwards and Lily Stretz linked together when they were freshman and sophomores in high school. Today, they are creating some of the most refreshingly unique and individually-sounding punk rock. The band was originally formed with the two singers, calling themselves "Twins" a la Meow Twins, though they are not actual twin sisters... more like cosmic, spiritual twins. Lily has put down the microphone and picked up the bass while Candra continues to hold down the lead vocals. They are joined by Ez Kramer on drums and Zaine Drayton on guitar, and currently call Long Beach, CA home. "In 2010 we started just going to shows at their record shop and then kinda met them I guess," says Lily. "We had friends that got on the label first and then kinda hooked us up," says Candra. "We were playing there too and setting up shows with our bands," explains Lily. "Most of the shows we went to there were shows we set up," adds Candra. Those who experienced Burger shop shows know what type of scene would gather. Zaine adds, "They had shows about twice a week. FREE shows twice a week!" Sean from Burger tells it like this: "Meow Twins were regulars at our record shop shows during the early years of our Fullerton store. They started as fans and before long started their own band and released their debut cassette (sold out, stream it on Spotify) on Burger Records! Double female punk vocals with a punk pedigree featuring the daughter of Corey Stretz of J.F.A.! Loud, fast and out of control, this band has been and will always be one of our favorites around here." They were also playing bigger shows at Burger events. There is one favorite show that sticks out. "Burger a Go-Go because you get free burgers," says Lily. "Best Coast played too," adds Ez. In February 2016, Meow Twins released their second Burger full length, Skin, and the band plans to hit the U.S. on tour this July, so keep an eye out for tour dates coming soon! Week 8: Vision "Light" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 8: Vision - "Light"   Grab the free download There are a lot of things a young man can choose to do after high school. Perhaps you could start a band. "As soon as Ben and I got out of high school we formed the band with Christopher who happens to be my older brother," says drummer Phillip Dominick. "We've been a band since 2011." At that time Burger Records were already cementing a reputation amongst Angelenos. "I've always been a fan of the label," says guitarist and vocalist Christopher Valer. "I've always been a fan of Ty Segall." Their band Vision would soon catch a ride on the Burger wave after a memorable encounter at a grassroots swap meet. "Independent label market, as I recall," remembers Phillip. "It was at Silverlake elementary school." Bassist Ben Nastase adds, "They had a booth there." Burger Records founder Sean Bohrman recalls: "We met Vision at a record label swap meet. I was sitting at our booth and saw this kid walk through the gate and start heading straight for us. He immediately handed us his demo and said he took a bus from East LA to come and meet us. He explained that they don't get the respect they deserve and it was really intense... this guy is not joking around! We listened to the demo on the way home from the swap and it blew us away. It was like a tough Brit-pop band from East LA... like Oasis with balls. And like Oasis, they were comprised of two brothers who are constantly at odds." From that point on, Vision and Burger were like family. "We released their debut tape, their debut LP, have taken them on tours and brought them on shows all over the USA. They're still just as intense as the day we met them." When we asked Vision "what's the best part of working with Burger Records?" their sentiment is similar to Sean's. "It's like working with your homies," says Chris. "Yeah, the relationship, it's really chill," added Ben. Guitarist George Verdugo went on, "the movement of Burger is really good. Burger just seems to be about the music which is awesome." Most of the Cyber Singles Club bands have a favorite Burger moment, Vision are no different and are unanimous in what that moment was. "Yes!" they all said at once with Chris going on to recall. "We always talk about it, when we went to do a photoshoot for Urban Outfitters up in Malibu. That was the first time we ever went to Malibu. We're poor kids from East LA, so that was the first time we ever got to go somewhere up those hills. We were partying... it was so cool. It was something that us street kids, punk rockers, would never experience. The fact that Burger was able to deliver that to us... it was like community. It's so cool that we can share that with them." Week 6: Hammered Satin "Upward Spiral" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 6: Hammered Satin - "Upward Spiral" Grab the free download Sometimes things you’ve done in the past lead to another entirely different thing years later. Such is the case with Noah Wallace, lead singer of Hammered Satin. Formed in 2010 with Noah, Dan Sandvick (bassist), and Conor Berle (guitarist), Hammered Satin released their first cassette with Burger Records in 2012. "Sean and Lee from Burger Records had a band called Thee Makeout Party and my old band S'cool Girls played with them once in like 2005," remembers Noah. Sean adds, "We've been idolizing Hammered Satin for years in their many incarnations as the forever-young bubblegum glam pop gods of LA. First we knew them as Teachers Pet out of San Diego, and a few years later Noah blew minds with his amazing band S'Cool Girls. Now, they've evolved to their most perfect form, Hammered Satin! Signing Hammered Satin was kind of a no-brainer. We didn’t have to pitch ourselves. We were already buddies and good friends, and playing music with each other from back in the day created that natural affinity that we like to associate ourselves with." An interest in obscure records was always a common bond. Noa notes, "They’re like record collector guys. We’re all record collectors. There is a weird understanding among the record collector community if you know what I mean, so you know where the influences are coming from whereas most people don't." So where did the influence for "Upward Spiral" come from? "It's a motivational song," says Noah, "meant to inspire the listener into believing in themselves. Artists these days seem to be quite negative and down on themselves. It's like some sort of epidemic. I think of this song as an antidote to negative thinking. I first heard the phrase 'upward spiral' said by the character Jack Donaghy on the TV show 30 Rock. Thought it was funny, so I used it. And in the spirit of glam rock, it's slightly braggadocious proclaiming that you are on an 'upward spiral' rather than a downward one!" You can also own the 7" vinyl record for Upward Spiral which also includes the song Lavender Lightning Lady. Week 5: The Flytraps "Female of the Species" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 5: The Flytraps - "Female of the Species"   Grab the free download The Flytraps have been an Orange County act to reckon with since early 2012, existing in a feral state unlike many bands that play it nice. Members have come and gone since their debut album She-Freak, but a core duo of bassist Kristin Cooper and guitarist Beth Boyd are keeping this train roaring down the tracks. The Flytraps' relationship with Burger Records has some deep roots. "It was a loooong time ago," says Kristin. "We were courting each other all coy and shit. It kinda fell into place." At one particular Burger show Kristin was a little rowdy, and as she put it, "I got trashed, there was some broken glass." Beth continued the story for our pleasure, and said "She went into a breaking frenzy. She just started throwing everything." Fortunately for the band, and much to Kristin's redemption, whatever she did worked wonders. "Well, then they signed us, so I did something right," recalled Kristin. The Flytraps may be wild at heart, but they aren't evil. "I'm just trying to cause mischief. I'm not trying to cause bodily harm." Sean from Burger describes their new song "Female of the Species" as "Turned up to 11, radioactive rock 'n' roll fire! Leather, high heels, and fist-pumping action have made this band one of our favorites for years and they are finally making their Burger Records debut! Turn it up!" Though the details are a bit foggy, Kristin adds, "We've got a bitchin' record coming out on Burger!" Week 4: Wyatt Blair "Pop Your Heart Out" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Week 4: Wyatt Blair - "Pop Your Heart Out"   Grab the free download Wyatt Blair has taken a life trip down a road paved with music. As a founder of the Los Angeles record label, shop, show promoter, and cassette manufacturer Lolipop Records, Wyatt has emerged in a thriving scene described as "semi-revolutionary, multi-cultural conglomeration of punk kids, loveless teen dreams and pop enthusiasts trying to change the world!" As a musician, he creates skillfully-crafted tunes from the combustion of raw energy and sophisticated hooks. If it weren’t for a friend sharing his original bedroom demo tape with Sean and Lee at Burger Records in 2009, things could’ve been different. "I never intended on doing anything with it," says Wyatt. "It was just something I was doing in my spare time. They really liked it and wanted to do a tape. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever that someone wanted to do something with my songs. It kind of started from there." From that point on, Burger Records and Wyatt Blair have been mutually influential for each other. Wyatt even has an impressive collection of Burger Releases. "I have maybe close to 500 of their releases. I’ve always kept up with what they are putting out. They are constantly turning me on to music that I’m inspired by. It's always like that with them. They're like an encyclopedia with knowledge." Sean (Burger Records) said "Wyatt Blair is one of the best songwriters I know. Straight up. He has an ear for hooks and knows how to use them. He started with an inconspicuous cassette called Candy Eyes on Burger and graduated to starting his own rock 'n' roll happening called Lolipop Records in LA. Adding, "last year we released his new solo album and one of my favorite Burger/Lolipop records of all time called Point of No Return!" Week 3: VAJJ "Honey Pie" | Volcom Cyber Singles Club
Burger Records x Volcom present Cyber Singles Club, features music from the newest breed of Burger Records stars in the making, recorded exclusively at Volcom Studio, and will be released for free download & streaming every Monday for 20 weeks beginning April 17th. Make sure you grab the week 1 download - The Side Eyes "Cat Call" as well as week 2's - The High Curbs "Empty Bottles." Week 3: VAJJ - "Honey Pie" Honey Pie by VAJJ Grab the free download VAJJ creates music that hits every mark between teenage pop and gnarly punk. Don’t let the smooth taste fool you though, this OC-based girl gang holds it down with true grit and style. Each of the three members sing and have been known to swap instruments as duty calls. The origin story for this band was conceived in early in high school. "I found out about Burger Records when I was a sophomore in high school," says bassist Alexia Del Alcazar. "I remember specifically this guy Brandon Ramone in English class was like, 'you should listen to this band The Garden.' I was like, whoa! What?! Here was this thing called Burger Records. There are cassettes. It was so weird to me. Then The Aquadolls was the second band." "The Lovely Bad Things was the first for me," says bassist Jackie Proctor. "I was immediately like, OK, this is so fun!" "We went to a lot of Burger shows," says Jackie. "We were like Burger girls," adds Alexia. Jackie recalls a particulary wild show: "I look around and the whole crowd is just taking their shirts off. Everybody’s kissing everybody, the band was kissing each other, and girls just flinging their bras. There was toilet paper and confetti. It was literally insane and everybody just holding each other. I was like, this can’t be happening right now. Let’s go to these shows all the time!" So it would seem that early Burger Records bands have influenced a new group of acts including VAJJ. Guitarist Viva Henny adds, "I feel like a lot of bands got their start from Burger. We were just drawn to it because there were so many good bands." Burger Records' Sean Bohrman says this about VAJJ: "Our favorite pack of teenage rock 'n' roll wild childs, VAJJ was brought to Burger after they recorded some sweet tunes with The Aquadolls. From there, we got them on some shows and that's when we fell for their goofy, lovable style and got them in the studio with Steve McDonald of Redd Kross to record their debut album, coming soon to Burger Records!" VAJJ continues to write their way into Burger Records history with the release of "Honey Pie" for Volcom's Cyber Singles Club, which shows just how much influence the Burger crew has on today's youth. "They came from just a couple dudes and just started this whole company," says Viva, "they really started a scene." Like this?
